I have grown various crops now and wanted to experiment with Okra and Garlic. Does anyone have experience on these two crops? i.e the growth habits and/or hustles plus the market. Do they require greenhouses ama open ni sawa? Responses appreciated.

Okra is good , just make sure that you have easy access to a market as once they grow past optimal size you have a loss making sitiuation.

On garlic I would advice warm and moderate weather, and lots of patience..and I mean lots of patience and sufficient capital..growing garlic is not cheap..

well am not upto date on the current pricing , however just to note ..

there is the farm price..in this event a broker buys the produce direct from your farm. Usually not a very high price but has less risks of that there could be a glut in the market or delays in transportation..

There is your standard market , price unfortunately the market is controlled by known ,brokers, sellers and buyers so you will in all likelihood lose some margin to these middle men.

but do the research go to wakulima, parklands and talk to the horticulture buyers near where you intend to farm.

FYI most of the garlic consumed in kenya is imported from China in containers by sea.. (read bulk)

best wishes...

Okra is my main interest here because I can manage since the farm is close to town. Garlic needs resources and time-something that has messed me before but plans are underway for future. If anyone here has experience with Okra share please. From the literature I have read it looks like an easy to grow crop.
