I am surprised that some people here will pres scribe religion to their 'selves' and their children even when they doubt the truth of these religions just because religion is said to have good effect on society.
It's clear that these people have a deep fear that if people are not lied to life will be unbearable. That is they have to lie to their 'selves' to have 'peace.'
But how can such a persons be taken seriously when they disparage a kind of living that is comprised of love and trust and purpose?
Worse still are those who seek to establish the truth of religion through 'scientific' or 'scholarly' means. For the gates of the spiritual comprise of infinite interest by the self for its ennoblement and eternal being. They are asking the wrong questions and expecting the right answers.
Finally, Richard Dawkins is not Stephen Hawking.

@Nabwire, there is no Atheist in a foxhole. Believers, has anyone ever wondered how "passionate" atheist are? they are just as zealous as others in spreading their beliefs. Can they just give us a break? Human beings believe because of their god-shaped hole and belief generates hope and hope makes us survive. without belief human beings would consume themselves. What prevents the poor from raiding the rich? if you told them that they have no hope and that the life they live is just that - human beings would become uncontrollable. I am a born again Christian, but one that has come to realize that all religions are useful (some may not be true) in structuring human behaviour. in the absence of religion human civilizations become increasingly hedonistic and selfish then destroys the family (the basic unit of society) then end up like the civilizations past (decadent then dead) and the Europe of now (dying but not even alive to that fact) All Mushrooms are edible! Some Mushroom are only edible ONCE!

To say that Buddha, Christ, or even Mohammed underwent their spiritual experiences to help in creating a stable society is an insult to religion and the spirituality of man.
You are wondering what stops the poor from raiding the rich; But who is it that is saying 'poor' or 'rich?'
Surely, my hope is not that one day I will be having a bank account with huge sums of money; but rather, my hope is that eventually I shall come into full consciousness and unity with the entire universe and all the force that there is.
And Christ assures anyone who is interested of this.
To say that humans love to keep society stable is to profess a big lie.
I am sorry to say this, but you've just relegated Christianity to a form of paganism.

Sorry for butting in but I could not resist the highlighted phrase. Why am I interested? Because you in a few words state that you believe in pantheism that also incorporates evolution in it. So it is surprising you have taken it upon yourself defend Christianity and its creationism. Throwing in, for example, the the word 'Christ' is trying to pull wool over our eyes. Ati Christ means: A state of mind or consciousness of "oneness" with All That Is based on Divine Truth. There are 3 Christs. Firstly, the historic Christ Jesus of Nazareth who attained the Christ consciousness; secondly, our Christ Self that exists within the spiritual heavens and is our personal inner teacher that guides us through intuition and higher thought; and thirdly, the Christ Mind, which is the Collective Christ Consciousness and is, symbolically, the Son of God. Ukweli isemwe!

Let the wool fall off your eyes, for I am not a defender of Christianity as such, but of faith in particular.
By faith I mean the process of, and being in relationship with God through the transformation of the egoic-self to the Divine Self. This is the truth of my belief in evolution.
Was it Francis Schaeffer that equated 'Pantheism' to 'All-Godism?' All the same, the truth of my faith is that everywhere I look I see God. Everything is from Him, everything is in Him.
On what, or rather Who, is the foundation of my faith? All the '3 Christs' you've mentioned; who are also, paradoxically, the One Christ.

On another vein, is God unhappy with an African becoming pope? (The Star article,11-Jan-2012, pg 22). It is common knowledge that Cardinal Arinze (Nigeria) was rigged out during the last election.
I shudder to imagine the reaction of caucasian catholics the day a black man becomes the head of the catholic church.
