hello there, i have a DSTV and am looking for a Satellite Finder so that I can align the dish myself when need be. First time it needed adjustment DSTV charged 2500. it's now dead again and am not ready to part with such an amount. Also if i wonna move to a new house, they will charge 4000 for re-installing.... Anybody who has managed to do these tasks on their own? where can i buy the gadget? at how much? an agent with multichoice wants to sell the satellite finder to me at 4000; but am sure i can get it cheaper somewhere.
please advice..

LOL Magigi! Please sambazia me whatever chang'aa you are taking! I surely need it this morning!
@dijkstra: Those things can be found at Luthuli for as little as 900 bob depending on the size you want! Though using it is 'not as easy as it should be'! Can hook you up to a guy who can saidia you if interested!

Sorry dij for delay. I've sent you the number. He should sort you out.
That thing needs some training to use. You have to use different frequencies to ensure you get full picture and sound. You have to move from 100 - 500Mhz to get the best signal. You may get the full signal at 100Mhz but when you go back into the house (assuming you will not make some poor housegirl/child do it for you), you have no signal!
Let us have feedback on how you fared!

Good people, Most DSTV installers are just greedy. When they fix your dish or better still you do it yourself, make sure that you apply some substance ( I forget its name) that looks and feels like black plastercene at the point where the cable connects with the dish. After applying it,cover with good quality insulating tape. Water will never get to it and so the rains will never bother you. These guys leave a weak point there so that come the rains, you call them . Also ask them to connect the DSTV such that you can still watch local stations using your kawaida ariel well just incase you want a break from DSTV,you don't need to call them back. well just a thought.. @ Bwenyenye The 'black thing' is called a water sealant. It prevents the penetration of moisture into the connector/connetion point hence slowing the corrosion. It's good to check the status of the connection on the LNB at least once a year. if there there is alot of corrosion aroing the connector/cable,it's good you redo it (DIY). (This is one point where signal losses can occur. ii) Majority of Newer TVs have 2 RCA Inputs (AV1 & AV2) & a RF. You can connect the dstv RCA out to AV1,the DVD player to RCA 2 while the aerial connection to RF in of TV(You will have to do a search for this if you hadn't). iii) During rainy seasons, the signals are really interfered. To minimise/get rid of this, ensure you/who ever is doing the installation have peaked/optimized the signal quality [This is Critical] (so that in times if adverse conditions, the excess microwaves/signals can take charge). -Another way to take care of rainfades,is to use a bigger dish [Not a favourite for many]. The larger the dish the more microwaves it gathers. - Try to avoid multiple connections/joints if you can. They cause alot of signal losses. - Re-alignment is neccessary at least once a year (this can be a DIY). - Enjoy doing it.

Whatever happened to division of labour? @djikstra,Kenya will not develop if you 'nyima' Wakenya wenzako riziki. By the way, what is the potential extra cost if you slid from the roof and broke your back as you try to save 4K?

@ Gekko Division of labour my foot,Kenya will not develop(kazi kwa vijana) the worst idea to have come from the politicians - you should know DIY books are best sellers in the west and they pretty much do a lot on their own and that is how they developed. If the 'vijana' slid from the roof would it be any better.

Believe it or not, when I relocated I just faced it in the direction the neighbourhood dishes were facing and it worked. Those guys were charging me 5k for just 2km.

Bwenyenye: The thick substance is 'Contacting grease' contains graphite. Available locally. The black tape is ' Self-amalgamating tape' perfect for water proofing. Available locally. The 'contacting grease' should be applied on an area free from rust. Consistency requires you to be as ignorant today as you were a year ago. @dijkstra,kindly hook me up or let me know how to go about it,I have a dish, cable, steel rod connector to the wall and all the stuff one needs but they've been lying on my balcony for a while now. When I moved out of where I used to stay,I left my dish there coz the chic moving in was going to have one installed so they removed mine and gave me her cable and the other stuff. Since then I've never gotten around to having my dish mounted smano BEER IS LIVING PROOF THAT GOD LOVES US AND WANTS US TO BE HAPPY!

@ Scar. Yes,the procedure is the same; though with bigger dishes it becomes slightly difficult. Using the dstv dish (should be around 90cm),& a FTA decoder, you can be able to receive free to air channels on KU-Band,though not many (herein africa). You will have the following: TV Channels: ETV (South Africa),SABC News International (South Africa Broadcasting Corporation),Press TV (24 Hour World News Channel in English),Daystar (Christian Channel),Love World (Christian Channel),Divine Truth (Christian Channel),TKC [Thy Kingdom Come] (Christian Channel),3ABN International (Christian Channel),Supreme Master,Emmanuel TV (Christian Channel),DBN [Deya Broadcasting Network] (Christian Channel_London),John 3:16 (Christian Channel),CTV (Christian Channel),CNBC Africa (Global Business Channel),TCT (Christian Channel),Hope International (Christian Channel),Mana Africa (Christian Channel),Mana 2 (Christian Channel),Apostolic Onenes (Christian Channel),Omega Channel (Christian Channel),Wonderful (Christian Channel),CVC,Novo Tempo,ACBN,Ezekiel TV,Adonai,Solid Rock,My TV Promo (Nigeria),Spirit Word,Channel G,Kingdom Life Network,Prayer TV,Prayer TV,Genesis TV,BritAsia TV.
Radio Channels: Channel Africa,TWR (Christian Radio),Divine Radio,1 Africa,CVC Africa,RPTA (Foreign Language).
OR:
TV Channels: ? KBC TV (Kenya). ? Family TV 1 (Kenya). ? Gospel TV (Kenya)
Radio Channels: ? Metro FM (Kenya). ? KBC Kiswahili (Kenya). ? KBC English (Kenya). ? Family FM (Kenya). ? Kameme FM (Kenya). ? Capital FM (Kenya). ? Hope FM (Kenya). ? Umoja FM (Kenya). ? Bahasha FM (Kenya). ? Family FM 2 (Kenya). ? Coro FM (Kenya). Not any & most of them are gospel channels. ___________________________ Most of the free channels here in Africa are on C-Band. C-band wavelength is longer than Ku,hence you will be required to use a bigger dish. 1.8M & above. With this u can receive both. It's worthy.
