With the sky rocketing fuel prices, which are the cars that are achieving the best mileage per KM, pls specify whether it is diesel or Petrol so that we can compare easily.

I will start. I have often used a leased 2700cc petrol VVTI and the efficiency is about 7km/Litre in town. Not bad for such a huge engine i suppose.

The Toyota Prius does over 51MPG and the Hyundai Accent does 40MPG. That's approximately 21km/litre and 17km/litre respectively.

just add the driving style plays a key role on how many MPG you can achieve.

Let's answer Injere based on practical experience, not googled up data sheets. I did Kakamega and back in a Toy fielder over Christmas. Average 12.85 Km per liter

i filled the tank completely i.e till the level where its touches the fuel tank lid when you put back the lid, the tank holds 40liters then set my trip meter. I later filled the tank again after 618kms, i needed 31.8 liters to fill the tank meaning i had covered 618kms using 31.8 liters. Good mileage depends on your driving style. Avoid speeds above 88km/h unless overtaking, avoid unnecessary use of brakes e.g if you can see corner far ahead, its better to step off the accelerator than wait till you reach the corner and apply the breaks

I regularly keep stats on fuel consumption on a 2L 2000 D4 auto premio. Best consumption has been a trip down to Msa where I got just under 16 km/l while driving mostly under the speed limit (100kph). Town driving of course gets stuff like 9-10 km/l depending on how much jam there is.

-> Driving style/habits play a major part in how much/little your car uses.
- Optimal speed also depends on the size of the engine.

From my googling online the diesels (TDIs, CDIs etc) look a good better for great consumption long term but would like some real life *Kenyan* practical experience from the guys with them. I'm told our diesel is not clean enough, even if Low Sulphur Diesel (500ppm sulphur content) is available.

Went for a trip sides za Uganda...did 450 Km's with around 35litres on a well maintained Mitsu Lancer.. thats roughly 13km/litre... pale Nakuru Salgaa and other areas with nicer roads, i hit 120km/h, average 80km/h.
From home to Nakuru the fuel gauge hadnt even moved... those Kapsabet potholes ndo zilimaliza Tank..

coming back i did 500km with 32litres of fuel.. thats 15km/litre.. same Lancer... guess its downhill

Did 1,250km over x-mas in a 1998, 1496cc-Mazda Familia (that I have had since 2003). Consumed a total of 109L. That comes to 11.47km/L

I used to think that it consumes too much; but now looking at the ACTUAL figures listed here, I think it is pretty good, given its age and that it's a 4WD version.

Talking about driving styles; you can force an auto trans car to shift upwards earlier by "pumping" the accelerator.
Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

Better still, take lessons from this Kibe Kamunyu guy who drove a 2,000cc Alfa Romeo 156 from Westlands to Naivasha on only 1.75L of fuel... 48km/L!!!

He should start an Efficient Driving School...

Great feed back guys! Does anyone how good these are: Toyota Innova (2lit), XTrail (diesel or Petrol)? I have also seen very good reviews of Mits. Evolution? And talking about Mitsubishi, why are these passenger cars (lancers?) so popular with the Asian Community in Genya? Ni nini wanajua....?

@Injere

I also wonder why the Asian community love the car.. but if you see a gujarati liking one then there must be a reason why? here are my zim million worth of thoughts..
1. They are not your common hype motorgaris.. read Toyotas there for not a common target for Grogan/Kirinyaga spare parts market.

2. You probably get genuine spare parts 90% of the time. Thus with good servicing they are quite reliable over the years.. mine is 14yrs old and looks much better than most KB somethings..

3. they do consume more compared to Toyota.. but hey the Subarus and German cars are similar if not worse guzzlers

but now they have started becoming too many as well i fear mine could just be as much a target..

and why do you call them 'passanger cars'?
