I have gone through the course and I am a PMP and PMI member. I went through it by self study, however, I have been a practicing PM for years so it was a bit easier for me (not easy).
Two aspects, to qualify for the actual examination (about $600) on last check, you have to apply and exhibit that you have the necessary prior PM experience. It is cheaper to first join PMI then pay for the exam, else you are looking at about an extra $300
It is a very useful tool in getting jobs or contracts especially when you are dealing with North American companies since it’s is more or less developed and tailored in their background. I have never regretted doing the course and it is very useful. As for the people who say it is but just a con word(?), well, it is a rigorous course and…well…does bring money to the bank.
On the alternatives, for the European market, they have the PRINCE2 course which I think you can ask the British council about, I have done that too but….I personally prefer the PMP. There is an accredited PMI Chapter institution to carry out PMI training in Kenya, although they have not been active in the PMI channels for the last couple of years.
