9% use personal cars for transport at what percentage of the traffic????......almost 50% meaning that it if you deal with this lot then you are addressing a big chunk of the problem!!!!

Hi Wazuans.
Finally am a member. To celebrate, i would like to contribute to Mukiha's observation.
I do agree with you, but only 50%. Reason being,present day Outering Road is usually a nightmare,yet it was constructed as a bypass to ease traffic flow from the Airport across to the other side of Thika Road.I do not want to sound like a pessimist but these by passes were designed years ago. The time it has take to acquire funding from the kina world Bank etc has seen transport dynamics change drastically.So i believe more thought should have gone into the redesigning of the bypasses.

However with the Thika road expansion,i beg to differ with you.traffic flow in thika road will be greatly enhanced once the expansion is done. and while railway would help,it will take years to restructure.we do not expect thika road users to suffer all the while as we await for a railway.

look at it this way,when the government finally puts up an efficient railway system,we will have a choice between the road and the railway.then you will choose.it will be a win win for all of us. thought

I oppose the motion that says 'Thika Road Expansion was a mistake coz I believe experts planned for it with good reasons. Other busy roads also need expansion coz road transport is here to stay.

Upgrading the railway line might not be a solution. The Shs. 26B being spent on the road is a one off. Railway lines are expensive to build and maintain. The government gave RVR the concession because Kenya Railways was a heavy burden to it's budget. Britain privatised the railway lines in the late eighties only for the companies to hand back the rail as being uneconomical. Maintainance of the same was poor and this led to several accidents leading to a national outcry. Compartive costs between a road and a rail system are needed taking into account the cost in use.

Am thinking the road will assist in a big way esp due to the many outlets for traffic en route to CBD. Some traffic will leave the highway via muthaiga, others via forest road, park road, ngara etc meaning the so many vehicles will get distributed towards CBD. Notice also the Chiromo roundabout is no more so vehicles heading to Westie and beyond via waiyaki way will just use forest road and drop at waiyaki way.

I also think we need to eliminate the other major round abouts (read GPO, Haile Sellasie, Nyayo, City Stadium etc

Regarding those roundabouts; what would you replace them with? Flyovers? We must be careful not to respond to a mosquito bite with a hammer!

@Mukiha, kudos for thinking outside the box. I agree with you 100%. This country needs strategies that will reduce number of cars on the roads without affecting efficiency. Thika road and all these by passes will do the exact opposite on both counts.
Another big govt blunder is allowing mitumba cars. This only helps japs get rid of their waste cars and drains our forex through fuel, spares , direct purchase etc. A greater evil is that Kenyan infrastructure dev. has been the opportunity cost of mitumba cars.
Our gava is greedy and shortsighted. Qsn - which individuals stand to benefit the most from thika rd project? Whose land or lands have literally been opened up by thika rd project and by passes? (and I don t mean the 'wanjikus' along thika rd).

Guys, either way, all nairobi environs will eventually be congested, road expansion or not! The fix lies in a multi-prong approach to solving congestion not refusing to take the first steps into developing infrastructure!!! geez. The highways still need to be expanded with roundabouts knocked up (an engineers problem not tax-payers) & aggressively pursue by-passes without relenting to public pressure, the metro-rails built as is in the CURRENT planning & implementation, decentralize government services and pursue satellite cities like Konza. Give credit where it is due for once.

It wasnt a mistake. We should now be talking of how we can improve the rail transport, which, I think, is in the pipeline. Its like saying 'I shouldnt have bought the TV, I should have taken the fridge instead' and yet u still need both in the end.

With the Lamu project coming up, Isiolo's status will change. Most of the goods to Nairobi will pass through Isiolo as Mombasa has now exceeded its capacity. A dual carriageway is planned for the whole stretch. The other issues is roads are not built to serve us now, but to serve for he next25 or 50 years depending on the design life.

How I wish something could be done quickly on The Uhuru Highway, Outering Road and Southern Bypass. The full benefit of Thika Road would be realized. Am sure the CBD is not the final destination of all those coming from Thika. It reminds me of taking 3.5hrs driving from Kisumu to Westlands and then 1.5hrs from Westlands to Imara Daima due to the Jam.

It is not a rumour any more Kenol-Marua section of A2 will be a dual carriage road in the future.


An advert was in the papers for Feasibility Study, Environmental and Socio–Economic Impact Studies and Detailed Engineering Design for Dualling ff Kenol – Sagana – Marua Road (A2).

The cancer eating this country remains tribalism. Having driven extensively on kenyan roads, Thika road project was long overdue, being the busiest in east n central Africa. The risk of the noble project getting unfair tribal n political tags runs high though. The appaling state of some other very important roads really irks me. Voi-Taveta, Eld-Ktl, Wby-Ksm, Ktl-S.Sudan, Outering, juja rd....Thank God most of them are soon to be given a facelift. BTW, the recently completed Sagana-Marua highway (A2) is now full of potholes barely 2yrs later, courtesy of one Kirinyaga Construction. ABK.

Were you driving a Buggati-Veyron or something close to that, and you must have been driving between midnight and 3am and Kenya must have been under a state of emergency!
Again the road must have been very straight with no corners at all.d'oh!
