Food prices usually rise due to an increased cost in raw ingredients In a nutshell, food prices are rising due to increasing costs in taking raw ingredients from the ground and converting them into the groceries that you can purchase at your local supermarket. Food prices throughout the world have gone up sharply and Oxfam has already given the world the warning that this trend will grow over the next two decades. I once tried wheat and burnt my fingers seriously coz of the weather. First season, lack of rains, 2nd season too much of it. I did maize which did quite well only for thugs to harvest half the shamba. Maybe greenhouses would do better then When I admire the wonder of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in worship of the Creator.

With the current food prices: one cabbage 80bob, one onion 5bob, one tomato 5bob, debe of potatoes 450bob, am seriously considering farming.
Squeezing 100,000 cabbages (@80 bob) in 1 acre will give you 8,000,000 bob in 4 months.
400,000 onions (@5bob) in 1/2 acre will give you 2m in 4 months. Harvesting 500,000 tomatoes (@5bob) from 1/2 acre will give you 2.5m in 3 months.
Thus by leasing 2acres of land in the outskirts of Nairobi one can easily make Ksh. 12.5 million every 4 months (or 37.5m per yr if under irrigation).

True, smart farming is the new thing, but being realistic is also healthy in this biz. Have seen a guy burn with his tomatoes produce to the point of contemplating suicide but again that was him. ****************Cabbage at 80???? Konow of a supermarket in Kiambu where they selling them from 5 bob!

I think the farmers were selling as low as 3 bob (really nice cabbages) Of course the middlemen who bought made a killing by reselling. Agricultural produce is very volatile (in pricing) Potatoes also experienced a spike (bei ya chips ikaongezeka) but then it went down hard. GOD BLESS YOUR LIFE
