Have seen those salaries in the papers and it's ridiculous. By the way where do professors live with those kinds of salaries?

So why don't they move to professions that pay better???

Most are lazy. They prefer some of our universities where nobody cares about your performance, what time you come in, whether you mark CAT papers etc. They will lecture from recycled notes dating back to 1998 yet so much has changed.

Why don't they move to other institutions where people are paid 500K?
Answer:Most lecture in 3 or so universities (165*3=495K).
Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

Actually they’ve been doing that...not changing professions, just changing the employers and countries. Its called brain drain - where you spend public resources educating / training someone from age 6 till they're competent and then "donate" them to the developed world which is willing to pay more... . Apparently there are only about 350 Professors in the country. Crying shame.

I’m not so sure that such arguments should be used as the justification for their pay. These look like the symptoms of a very bad problem. Read the balckboard (nation) and if what was described there is anything to go by, you’re left to wonder whether they are equipped to perform. With the introduction of Module II(Parallel degree) student numbers are obscenely high. Staff numbers didnt change much. Some of these Universities have numerous constituent colleges which forces lecturers to hop from one part of the country to the other in the name of educating future generations. Where do they get time to sit down and research. And talking about research, do they receive adequate funding?

You mean like Parliament?

Probably this is a good opportunity to interrogate what the professors actually earn in total. There is a lot of info they are not disclosing to the public.

-How many hours do they actually per week?

-If they actually research as they say... how much of this research is published or converted into life changing situations.

-are people paid by how much they know or by how much they do with what they know?

what a foolish argument - (no pun though) ..do we know if they have other sources of income ...also most of them lecture in other universities ..thus tripling their income ifnot quadrupling...
But i must agree most profs in kenya are lazy and donot do research and write papers...
