The name Karatina is a diminutive term for Muratina - the name of a squash/courgette tree. The town was founded before the British Colonization of Kenya by Gikuyu women who used to trade their crafts and food under a courgette (muratina) tree. Women would direct each other on where to sell or buy merchandise under the Karatina

Karatina==Quarantine

I remember reading this sometimes back in the papers about the history of the place.The british had imposed a quarantine in the area because of some disease.
Which is which???

What do, Ngurubani(Mwea) and Burguret(Nanyuki) mean?

I heard that the name karatina was because a certain Mzungu would treat the cows from the rear. This being very strange to the locals they could only call the place karatina
