Kenyan investment firm Centum's pretax profit inched down to 828 million shillings ($8.57 million) in its first half from 836 million shillings in the year-ago period, its chief executive said on Wednesday, attributing the performance to a weakening of stocks at the bourse this year.
James Mworia said the company cut its exposure to the Kenyan stock market to 9 percent of its total portfolio from 26 percent during the period, adding that high yields in the fixed-income market had cushioned the earnings.
Kenyan shares have suffered from a steep fall in the shilling currency this year as well as high inflation, weakening the bourse's performance by 16 percent during the period, Mworia told investors.
Centum, formerly known as ICDC, plans to shift its portfolio through entry into the lucrative property sector in east Africa. ($1 = 96.650 Kenyan shillings) (Reporting by Beatrice Gachenge; Writing by Duncan Miriri)

Not bad. If you use your money goggles, you can see that Mworia represents the current generation of CEOs who make perfect choices at the right time. Assume it was some old tired CEO still steering Centum, the company would have been caught napping deep in the buourse with 26% of its portfolio in shares.
Wisdom to detect when share prices hit rock bottom.
When interest on bonds keep going up, you know the bear run is on high street. When interest on bonds start leveling, the bear has met the bull and they have hit rock bottom. When the interest rates on bonds start coming down, the bull has overpowered the bear and you better be riding the bull.

I am waiting to see what @Centum's comment.

Meanwhile, this is the first admission by an investment company of IS stress due to market down play.

As we hope our darlings (Centum, tranny, insurances) were not caught napping, lets ask ourselves who they sold them to, because its not me. Also, if they sold, NO DIVIDENDS.

Pathetic results.Centum over the past two years has been making profits by selling its quoted shares in the NSE.Now that they are nearly selling all of them going forward where will the profits come from

Another company that relies on the NSE for investment income.. How sad!! Sad

Thank God i'm in Jubilee where it is unheard of and unacceptable to announce a lower EPS to shareholders whether the NSE is up or down.. The power of massive diversification..

Actually I think they are splendid results, given how the market has been, its not easy to make money in a continuously bear market.Dont forget they are an investment company.

The increase in interest rate has hit them bad in both finance costs and also if they are into bond trading they must be feeling the heat, the only way they could have made cash is through the subsidiaries and associate companies.

Centum reading for war

Centums results clearly indicate that teh organisation os gearing up for a forthcoming war, this can be deduced from the large volumes of cash they seem to be holding.

There is a war brewing but where is it?

On first sight decent results. On a second look crap results. They retained over 2B in profits from the year to 31 Mar 2011. An additional 2B in equity/ assets and they report lower profits? They should have paid a cash dividend to shareholders. My 2 cents

Centum seeks Sh6bn-dollar loan for real estate

The firm is seeking a dollar-dominated loan to develop the first phase of a real-estate project comprising offices, residential apartments, hotels, shopping malls and recreational facilities on a 100-acre piece of land in Runda. The developments will include a 255-bed hotel and 544 homes. It will price it rents in dollars.

The total cost of the first phase, which will begin next year and take two years is Sh10.8 billion, with the balance being plugged by Sh4.8 billion from equity financing and Sh2 billion from its coffers.
