I've worked for a muhindi before and he remains the best boss I've ever had. He left me to do my job without interference because he had confidence in my output. Like mukiha and aemathenge say, your employer will treat you the way you 'deserve' to be treated. If you don't act like a good employee, the employer will not treat you like one.

Would it be interesting if people 'paid peanuts' were actually paid using peanuts,as in njugu? And where did that phrase come from?

Why are small salaries called peanuts?

Peanuts are not cheap by any standards....we buy about 10 nuts on Uhuru highway for ten bob...that's a shilling per nut....actually more expensive than coffee or tea!!!!

Check their prices in the supermarkets and see

I'm imagining Njoroge Mwaura carrying a gunnybag containing 150k peanuts or Linus Gitahi with a pick up carry 2.5 million peanuts! LOL!

very interesting,i must say...

i think small amount of money used to be associated with peanuts because the prices of peanuts used to be relatively low compared to other grains...

ofcourse the situation has now changed in Kenya after the demand for the peanuts outstripped it supply thus pushing the prices north...

.... I don't know, maybe the peanuts could also be the size and relevance ... the person who coined the saying must have been looking for something small which many people do not use ... thus came up with peanuts

Well, forward or not,the information looks genuine for graduate trainees salos at least for 6 companies that am 100% sure of. Most employees will never tell you how much they earn unless they think they make a lot,and what is a lot in Kenya?? Plus no employer will say how much they pay their employers since 'the wheels of capitalism are oiled by the blood of workers'-Simpsons.

Interesting topic though. One thing is clear though,if you earn 200k Gross, you feel like you are someone in society, yet in Nairobi this is nothing to write home about. A good mortgage for a 'good' house will set you back 100k for 20 yrs 8m,but some prefer to pay high rent to look rich. A car will set you back 30k,education,shopping,entertainment,credit cards, chama (sacco)...and you realise you need a job netting 500k plus where my pals (doctors, lawyers) are. And someone thinks 2.5m is a lot.

Thats why i started my own business where net profit means net..

Have you ever asked yourself how much value your work adds to your employer? And by 'value' I don't mean monetary alone......

Had to post this article, such a delight,I think that is why so many young guys are getting experience and capital then going it alone:

http://www.truthdig.com/...wont_stop_a_depression/

By the way,I think the peanuts issue's etymology can be derived from the idiom;

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

something that you say which means that only stupid people will work for you if you do not pay very much 'This company is full of incompetents!' 'Well,if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.'

worked with a brokerage firm once and the Mhindi would pay us like on 30th or 31st,a cheque......7.5K. i remember one time in December when the guy paid us by cheques on 24th! and i had no fare.

No wonder those guys mess with investors shares.
