This thread is inspired from the Getaways in Kenya thread!

Please share your experiences of places that members can visit on a budget especially for the last minute planning.

Top on my list:-
KWS banda across the country. Suitable for families, self catering facilities, majority located within parks, hence one automatically enjoys game drive.

The cost: Afforable to a majority of Kenyans.

Allow me to digress at this early stage. The highlighted statement is NOT true! According to KNBS, about 56% of Kenyans live on less than one dollar a day. Now that's the "majority" and surely, such people CANNOT afford a family holiday in a KWS Banda.

HERE are the rates for the bandas: http://www.kws.org/expor...ads/KWS_Banda_Rates.pdf

You will see that "the majority of Kenyans" cannot afford them.

The 56% of Kenyans who live on less than a dollar a day are probably not online.,. and thus not @emmndi's target. And for those who can afford a holiday, the KWS bandas are the cheapest you can get. I organize holidays for people and trust me,the few who can afford do not even touch the KWS bandas with a mkwajo. i know this for a fact

@emmndi was only trying to encourage those who can afford to share experiences on where to go. the thread was meant to help those who can,and want to take their families somewhere on holiday. so...for the sake of those who can afford, lets share ideas..Dec is almost here

1. KWS bandas
2. Coast - Cottages(check out Langata link.com)
3. Masai Mara - Go for tented camps(Check out Olmorantented camp.com)OR (Mara sidai camp, cant remember the website, google it

PS: If visiting a game park, most of the hotels/camps either outside the park or at the park's border have the best rates as opposed to those located deep inside the park. plan your holiday early,it saves you a LOT!

The KWS bandas are good, very good indeed.. but they're all self catering. Someone who can afford a good holiday for his family, doesn't want to go start planning meals budgets and subjecting his wifey to cookings and cleaning na eti wako holiday. They want everything done for them(thus the real FB basis in hotels etc). A real holiday..warudi kama wamenona wote :)

If on a budget, the bandas are a perfect option, and be prepared to either cook or hire a cook(or go with the house help)

@leona; that's the clincher; "Someone who can afford a good holiday for his family"

That isn't someone looking for a budget holiday!

I make it a point to go on holiday with my family for at least 5 days every year during Christmas. I budget about 50k for a family of 2 adults and 2 children for the five days.

The only way for us is self-catering accommodation. It is not as cumbersome as you put it... Many self-catering places will have a cook for hire {about 200 - 500 bob per day} but we don't bother.

Self-catering can also be very cost-effective if you join hands with family friends - say, 2 or 3 families staying in one large house. I have done it and the children really have a lot of fun...

We also do occasional short trips [2-3 nights] during the year... sometimes camping, other times self-catering houses.

BTW: For me going to shags does NOT qualify as a holiday!
