lets get this right, when a student is going for phd he has to be smart right? and second, he/she should be willing to take any responsibility the institution is asking in exchange of free fees right? That is my assumption, even the best student in the world will not get anything for free, having that opportunity to do research for a school in exchange of free education is as free as it can get.

But again if you graduated from Deviry university like Jason, I won't expect you to be accepted to any phd program and i know a number of kenyans doing phd in some so very low schools in USA just to be able to tell people back home that they have a phd. Anyone with online degree is questionable even Shaq is doing phd right now, online~!

Besides the reputation of the graduate school your friends go to, you should take to account their publishing records too. I dont think anyone will go through several grad school years any where just 'to tell people back home'.

I have always preferred more when it comes to education.

@luttz. The School of economics at the UoN has a PhD program by coursework (evening taught) and Thesis. The cost is about USD1200 per annum. The program takes 4 years.

At United States for online Ph.D. Degree programs there are many universities. An online PhD degree from an accredited university is definitely worthy.
