ha ha Kingfisher I agree - esp since in 'that alien western world' they mostly believe that an engagement ring should be MORE expensive than the wedding ring and if I am not wrong,it should be worth abt 5-10% of the value of your car if you have one - so if you are rolling in an Kshs 1.4m Xtrail,start planning to fork out 70-140k - otherwise just tell her you love her,ask her to marry you - invite SK to the negotiations (we will be able to advise on EPS,PBIT,etc and ensure very reasonable terms) and save the cash for setting up your matrimonial home - smile

Weka email I send you a pict of one and we agree on a price.
My pal (I was his best man) had bought a ring from Nagin (hope that's the name)
but his sister bought him another ring from SA that he preferred meaning he's been stuck with this one which I long forgot that I was supposed to get a buyer.... great ring with the receipt and certificate of authenticity. You can also get it tested by Nagin using some machine I hear they have...

no matter what you buy you will feel conned. If you dont feel conned I doubt she will like the ring (diamond too small). Us boys just dont understand diamonds (unless we are selling them).

Its a waste of money but it will make her happy (as her friends will know how MUCH in shilling terms) you love her ...

but stones STATO looked bigger than the nairobi lot for the same prices,so I guess SA is a good idea too if u know someone flying in ...

@Anasazi,

Build on your own foundation.Invest in your relationship in all ways.BTW engagement is not a western concept,it has always been there in almost all communities only done differently. Shop around for a diamond ring......

by the way,there is this thing affectionately called 'american diamond' in NAI. U can get far bigger stones and no one can tell the difference .. until your sweetie stands next to someone with the real thing. then she will start scrubbing hers waiting for it to shine like Njoki's ... poor u that night.

Jammas,lets kill this doze of diamond engagement rings. There are better ways to get engaged bila this thing.

When I was in the thick of things to get hitched,the biggest challange was balancing the wedding budget. Then I was asked when the engagement ring is coming. It was hard enough to fork out 4-500k for the wedding (for a young man to fork out that cash is a challenge)!!

By the way,it is true that this ring will cost you at least 4 times what the wedding ring will cost. The funny thing,the ka diamond or whatever stone you have sometimes falls out never to be seen again.

Dude-can't recommend a duka,but some free advice. Sit down,budget for dowry,wedding,your 1st home,then and only then think about the engagement ring. U may end up saying if she won't marry u without one,akae. And watch a movie called priceless.

Anasazi,If Cash is tight forget about the engagement ring unless you intend to get married in the next five years.
When you get down to budgeting for the real thing and also the life after the wedding you will need every penny that you can lay your hands on.
In between the wedding show and samantha bridal expo uko na real problems the budget could be anything. If her relatives and yours watch those things,brace yourself for an overinflated budget
If an engagement ring is what will show your love and commitment to her,then i must be missing something. Buy a good wedding ring when the time comes.
Be practical and i think engagement rings are overrated and overhere

@Anasa....... check out the shops at Diamond Plaza in parklands but if u can get one from outside kenya u can either save cash or get better quality

@others,the guy didnt say he has issues with cash,mnaharibia mtu hapa,every chic wants it all,from the flowers,the rings and etc.

@Anasasi

Man,if you can't afford don't try. You start with engagement ring and end up making AG an option for your wedding!!

Be serious bwana ai!!! you must be good and dreaming. On a light note,are you dreaming about her? I mean the ideal her? Eheeeee Ms universe!!!!!!!!

Ananasi,good for the decision you made,go AG chambers. You can even request for a special one where a lawyer will come to your house and do everything and you will be left with original cert. it will cost less than 50k. Then tafuta jamaa in Goma give him like 200USD you will get the best uncut stone,tafuta goldsmith,akufanyie ring moja ambayo when in town you will be restricted on where you move,Moi avenue towards eastlands usahau. If in kenya you dont get a good goldsmith i have a guy in Kigali rwanda who can do it for you.....this is for real dude

life is an endless adventure

If you happen to pass through TZ they have a 'biashara street' of goldsmiths in Dar. You wont miss something good... at a good price. Chances of being gongwad are almost nil. But take a local who knows reputable shops with you.
But make sure you measure your honey's finger first so they can adjust to the correct size before you collect!

I think you should only get a good engagement ring once you have discussed the dowry issue with your future in-laws. Btw In Kenya being engaged doesn't guarantee you anything.
