Some snipets In 1977 her husband, Mwangi Mathai, left her. After a lengthy separation, in 1979 he sued for divorce, saying she was too strong-minded for a woman and that he was unable to control her. He publicly accused her of adultery with another Member of Parliament,[29] causing his high blood pressure, and being cruel. The judge in the divorce case agreed with the husband. Shortly after the trial, in an interview with Viva magazine, Maathai referred to the judge as either incompetent or corrupt. The interview angered the judge, and she was charged with contempt of court, found guilty, and sentenced to six months in jail. After three days in Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi, her lawyer formulated a statement which the court found sufficient for her release. Shortly after the divorce, her former husband sent a letter via his lawyer demanding that Maathai drop his surname. Does anyone here know the name of this idiot of a Judge? Lets name and shame him. Why? If people don't want to live together...they don't. All Mushrooms are edible! Some Mushroom are only edible ONCE!

The article is biased at best but if you had been around then to follow the story on print media (DN particularly serialised the divorce proceedings to the end)),you know that so much has not been said.I need not go further. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

@Danas10 If you read the Viva article, it would be much clearer to you. Mary Josphine Wangari condemned the judge for stating in his verdict that Wangari was committing adultly in her marriage. She pleaded not guilty and demanded evidence but none was forthcoming. The husband simply wanted a divorce by all means necessary including blaming his wife for adultly in order to appeace MO1 and have freedom to swing with the girls. For me, one of the major reasons to move beyond just the planting of trees was that I have tendency to look at the causes of a problem. We often preoccupy ourselves with the symptoms, whereas if we went to the root cause of the problems, we would be able to overcome the problems once and for all. But when you have bad governance, of course, these resources are destroyed: The forests are deforested, there is illegal logging, there is soil erosion.
