Hi Guys,

Long time since I was last here.

Now, kindly, I seek your thoughts on something, a business opportunity.

A friend of mine is considering doing an interesting business: helping masters students in their resarch works. He is not sure if he can make money from this; he is also not very sure if people out there are doing this kind of "business", so to call it.

Ok, he has the qualifications to do a good job in his line of specialization. He sees that there are so many students doing masters and their supervisors are so busy .... he thought he could help as a form of business.

He will be effectively working as a consultant: helping the student do a good proposal, getting time to read the stuff and make improvements, guiding the students in the research itself, reading the completed reports, etc.

But he does not plan to do the project for the student, of course. He thinks that with the specialist nature of the work, he could have a niche.

Any thoughts?

Thanks a lot.

if this is the route our students will take, then Kenya is doomed and it defeats the purpose of mentorship and maturing a student to become independent.

I don't think he will fair well coz he will be offering less than what is already in the market. Guys are doing the entire work from proposal to the dissert.

Surprising news!!

Didnt know that the entire work is done from proposal to the report itself!

That is bad.

My friend is to address the following issues without doing the project for the student:

(a). Find time to work with the student to refine the proposal;

(b). Be available to read the reports and respond in time on the key issues to improve on.

(c). Work with the student to prepare for defending the document.

Traditional supervisors now have no time at all and most students have a full-time job that keeps them very busy.

Thanks gentlemen for the thoughts.

@abby,

open computer services bureaus around the major universities i.e; juja(jkuat), km ( kenyatta univ), kesses (moi), sogomo (chepkoilel), rongai ( catholic university), around nairobi university and others. Market these services directly to the students.

Alternatively, with several sprouting university colleges, just apply for a tutorial fellow....

Guys, i have in this side biz for the last 5 years. So i know one or two things. Its best as a side job, not a fulltime. You cant have one fee for all students. You need have categories. 80k is way up up there, even international students dnt have that cash. If possible, charge in Usd dollars. My clients' profile include: kenyan, nigerian, ugandan, UK and canadian students. Have also done for a few NGOs and corporates. I don't do bila both parties agreeing on all terms and the client pays at least 20% downpayment. Best paying clients in my profile: canadian and nigerian. They pay bila maneno 40. They also don't have thousands of corrections. Least reliable guys: public uni, esp low cadre employees( no offence). Lecturers in public uni wasumbufu. Do this, undo, redo that, u go in circles. When charging, factor in those corrections, they can make u pull your hair out.i have done anything and everythng interms of subjects of research. Including tsunami, terrorism and extremism, procurement, miraa, internet banking, etc. Bt i'm getting busy and unable to do them of late, so, taking only few. Max 2 a month. If interestd to know more, email me. Thanks.

Good thoughts my Bro; very useful. I do appreciate.

It is being looked at as a side business, to raise about Kshs. 120k per year. Just about 10k per month (averaged) so that the guy can buy food .... not a bad idea, in my view.

Thanks and a good afternoon.

Proposal only... Depends on various factors. E.g student or corporate, public univ or private, local or non-local. For public students local, its in the range of 100$ to 120$. Though i have taken slightly less than the above figure. For international and corporates, its from 250$ to 500$ depending on whats at hand.
