My friend goes for an interview, and since he is desperate he says he wants 40k,now one of the guys being interviewd says 60k which is what the company is offering,on top of that the interviewer knows one of the referees and is actually promised the job,but she is having doubt coz the 60k is just slightly above what he gets and the new co. Doesn't have benefits i.e hospital etc..Assuming the 60k guy rejects the offer and my 40k buddy is hired,is there a possibility he will be given the 60k.any1 with such an experince of quoting a lower figures.NO JOKES

They will pay her what they pay staff at that level which is 60K. Different salaries on one line are a cause of many headaches. If you quote low you'll most likely get the 60K unless it is a CEO job or highly specialized job or special individual, where it's heard to get someone,or a thick company. BTW in kawa jobs quoting too high and qualifying it/insisting is a blunder . I think you saw the posting on salaries here, companies pay more or less the same for the same level.

if the company got a salary scale then they may pay him 60K....

otherwise, they will pay him less than 40K for a start (what he had quoted) and may be 40K upon passing the probation....

My friend, the world has changed. It's now a get more out of your employee for less world. If she asked for 40k then 40k is what she'll get.

karigus - it depends on whether it is an established corporate or jua kali outfit. pia among corporates, there are some that no longer care about salary scales. you ask for less and show competence, kazi utapewa.

what i meant is,in some large corporates they will give you an out-of-band salary if they think you can do the job for less than they would usually pay. it is shortsighted though because once you gather experience and know you were shortchanged, utaanza kufanya kazi na macho ikiaangalia kwingine.

The lady will only get what she asked for. Last year we hired an accounts guy. we had set aside 50k in the budget as his pay,the guy asked for 36k,that is what we gave him, this yr we gave him a 20% rise which he was very happy about, but he is still pocketing less than what had be budgeted for him a year ago.

@Carygoh

Remember that thread on 'your first salary' or something like that? i wish you had printed for her that thread... she wouldnt have 'undersold' herself... may be. Lots of experiences and insights there.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

She asked for 40...so 40 she will get! She can just take the 40k or whatever they will offer her,and negotiate her salo once she's employed. Most employers dont take it kindly when you start negotiating your salo even before you're fully employed! If she tries to show her dissatisfaction at this point, they might not even take her on the basis of 'she'll be one of those disgruntled employees who can never work dilligently owing to poor pay or issues with the employer..

But,just so she knows...Tell her next time she should do her homework thoroughly before going for an interview(so as to have a clue as to how much the company pays). Then, she should quote in terms of ranges as opposed to exact amounts. E.g between 45 and 60K. This gives one room for negotiation and also paints a good picture of you in the Employer's eyes coz if you say a fixed figure, they might take you to be a rigid person with little room for negotiation,or in some cases exploit you if whatever you quoted was on the lower side.

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't..

a good buddy of mine was desperately looking for a job to keep her in Nbi after completing her attachment.coz her parents wanted her to stay at rural hme,
She was luckily shortlisted for an interview, was asked how much salo she is comfortable,,,she said 20k,,,,,was asked why 20 k and you are a graduate? innocently and honestly said this her first job,no experience and some1 has to start frm somewhere,,,,,,,,,,,
3wks later she was called,,given letter of appointment starting salary gross 65k among other benefits,,,,without godfather almost fainted.
And thats the excuse her parents have let her stay in Nbi,,,,

If its a company with sound structures and cares for its employee satisfaction she will get da 60k. Just curious Carygoh,a company well established in east n central africa? Position lyk chief accountant! 60k????

The chief value of money lies in the fact that one lives in a world in which it is overestimated.

Some companies will pay within their ranges for a position, others will give what you ask for. To give an example,i recently joined a well established company, and though during the interview i quoted what i believed to be high, they have me exactly what i asked for. This left me feeling like i should have quoted higher than i did. I now feel that i should get experience in this place and move for greener pastures, next time quoting what i believe should be the right saw for the job.

without a vision,a people perish
