If an employee steals from you,do you fire his ass,or you retain him and let the salary pay whatever he stole. Think Positive Test Negative

if you retain him so as to recoup the value of the stolen thing from his pay,he can as well as steal something else to compensate the deductions... FIRE HIM! When you run so fast to get somewhere, you miss the fun of getting there... Life is not a race,so take it slowly.... When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend

Depends on the actual situation but as for me he will most likely get the SACK,a thief remains a thief!!!! The chief value of money lies in the fact that one lives in a world in which it is overestimated. ..."Wewe ni mtu mdogo sana....na mwenye amekuandika pia ni mtu mdogo sana!".

since the employee has violated the code of conduct as stipulated in the company's regulations by either stealing or misappropriation, then the employee qualifies for a summary dismissal...fire him!!! NEVER TALK OF A RHINO IF THERE IS NO TREE NEAREBY - ZULU PROVERB ...besides, the presence of a safe alone does not signify that there is money inside...

Me thinks it depends on situation,eg A cashier causing loss to the company by giving out incorrect change can be surcharged but one pocketing company cash should be fired!

let him not hit him/herself with the door on their way out... it just gets worse! and this is from past experience where I was the employer lest ya'll are wondering... if you can not be kind,at least have the decency to be vague speak softly and carry a big stick, you will go far... ...there are 2 ways to this. If for example, money or something else under his custody gets lost,he is responsible. Money can get lost when he is paying out things in the office eg per diems, office supplies etc. But it does not mean that he is the one who stole. In that case he does not need a sack but a warning is in order.
.. On the other hand if s/he literally steals and there is enough evidence that /she did it,he deserves to be fired instantly...

I suspect that your dilemna regards your loss..
My advice,if there is incontrovertible evidence of his guilt, accept the loss as a sunk cost, and fire the dude....
Its an indictment of your recruitment process (or possibly your remuneration policy)...
Learn the lesson and move on...
If you keep him,he is likely to 'infect' and embolden others who may have similar tendencies...
Yep... prior experience too...

When money is lost, nothing is lost.
When Health is lost, something is lost.
BUT
When character is lost, everything is lost.
What did your employee lose. If its character then FIRE.

There was a lapse - in policy/ procedures, somewhere. Identify this loophole, plug it asap before it is exploited yet again to fleece you. Was this person alone? In cahoots with others. Fire decisivley. Let culprit be arrested/ charged as a lesson to remaining staff.
..there's nothing,absolutely nothing really,that I can't do if I put my mind to it.

@ Carygoh Since your employer is sufficiently philantropic to give you free lunch,an employee (or your own employees) should not take advantage and steal from you, crack the whip! Work like you will die tomorrow, plan like you will never die "Never regret, if its good, its wonderful. If its bad, its experience."

My friends, learn to forgive. God set a good example with Adam. Demote the guy and let him work harder. Imagine a thief with no job... how have you helped the situation?
Bright and interesting people talk about ideas. Those of average intelligence talk about things. Stupid people talk about other people.

I think that such things always depend on a lot of things. It shouldn't be so automatic to fire someone. If there is past experience let him get help as to why he did what he did. This way if there is a problem let it be addressed. I also think that past experiences also matter. Is he a regular thief or this is a one off. So my take address the problem first, and if he doesn't change after all has been done, then firing should be the last option. When we pray in praise to God,he makes a difference in our lives.
