NEVER TALK OF A RHINO IF THERE IS NO TREE NEAREBY - ZULU PROVERB *...besides, the presence of a safe alone does not signify that there is money inside...*

Money can get lost when he is paying out things in the office eg per diems,office supplies etc. But it does not mean that he is the one who stole. In that case he does not need a sack but a warning is in order. .. On the other hand if s/he literally steals and there is enough evidence that /she did it,he deserves to be fired instantly...

My advice,if there is incontrovertible evidence of his guilt,accept the loss as a sunk cost,and fire the dude.... Its an indictment of your recruitment process (or possibly your remuneration policy)... Learn the lesson and move on... If you keep him,he is likely to 'infect' and embolden others who may have similar tendencies... Yep... prior experience too...
