He does not need a shrink yet! He needs a counselling.

Yes, he needs counseling. And phobias are curable.

Seems the phobia was triggered by the Accident. As famooz has said, i strongly believe it will slowly go away...but some effort has to be put in place so as to get over the fear. Since he can still drive when there is someone on the passanger seat, i would recommend you encourage him to start using the car for short distances especially when running local errands...i.e going to the supermarket within the estate, or taking the car for a short drive within the estate. that will help him slowly develop confidence and in-turn get over his fears. Also if he happens to give you a ride as a passanger, compliment him for being a good driver. That will do wonders.

@mkenya. Good points there. It looks odd when he use public means @ gari iko parked. Only the spouse uses it.

We have many lunatics on the road such that at times you would wish to simply sit back and let someone do the driving. As a newbie driver there are several times I left the car parked as I hopped into a jive.

I can imagine what the dude is going through especially after the accident. It can be traumatising but then Njenga and co could possibly help him out.

he could invest in a driver-but this is no long term solution.

There is something called "flooding" in counseling-whereby this person can be put in a situation that he would have no other option but to drive himself from that situation. This is like a "fear our pap" approach--the opposite of pesa pap

How can one overcome the phobia for driving? He/she has all the papers and skills. Bt due to an accident he had, he's never managed to drive on his own again. He does driving tests and instructors ask him why he is doing them coz he need no instructions. You give him keys and you sit next to him, he drives like any skilled driver. Bt alone, or his own car, never tried for several years now, esp nbi roads. How can he be helped?

Helped? By asking him not to drive at all - this is a powder keg on our roads, am afraid to say so.

@mpobiz..what do u mean? Pls elaborate. I remember once he told me he had a panic in kiambu rd and he hit a mat from behind. U can imagin the chaos. To the extent after he paid them, couldnt drive that day and had to hire a driver to take him home.

...Drive with him/her along Mombasa road. Plough through that herd of Maasai cows crossing the road. As you do this keep laughing...Pack the car beside the road...Take out your laptop and start Wazuaring as you wait for the cops. Pretend that what has happened is a very small thing...
