wee kizee,sasa hiyo ni kusema nin? Ati backward compatibility with GPRS....? What does that mean in real terms for a layman kama mimi. what i understand is that this edge network that is from my comp to the service provider (telkom) is linked to outside world via GPRS (telkom to rest of the world) network. Is this right? does this make a difference in speeds to me at my comp?

He!Thats the stupidest thing i have heard.....ati it has backward compatibility to gprs?!............thats like saying your color tv can also show black and white video!...........its a good laugh though.

gues it means u cud use either of the two depending on signal strength... i am no authority and i wud hope that the more ict savvy folk in SK wud clarify...i think it trumps safcom anyway..at 1/- per mb..safcom at best is at 2/-...worse...it gets terribly slow at peak time...i will get the orange bundle before theyr network gets congestd

Hey,im on the sluggish zain,been looking for a diffrent network to move to.
Is the orange thing worth it?
can i get the line & use my HUAWEI E220 USB MODEM?
Or i have to buy the new gadget?
is there a tarrif that i can get the modem for free?

True. Many of Us dont understand the 'many english' used in IT.

Now some IT person to advice us whats the better option in terms of cost.

Some time ago someone in a a thread differentiated based on Use. Some heavy downloaders were recommended Orange. And the ones that just check mail like me to stick to Safcom. INSIGHTS?

Gprs(2.5G) is slow and old technology (about 96 kbps) and was replaced by Edge(2.75G) which handles gprs and goes further to around 256 kbps. This was then replaced by Umts(3G) which has a theoretical maximum speed of 3200 kbps (3.2Mbps) this has been made faster by HSDPA(3.5G) with a theoretical maximum download speed of 7.2 Mbps. Safaricom has a THEORETICAL maximum speed of 3.2 Mbps(HSPA) but they provide modems capable of a theoretical max of 7.2 Mbps(HSDPA)

If you dont use net a lot,and dont mind the costs,and within nairobi,msa,nkr or eld city centres,take safaricom. I would recommend orange if you are not a heavy user. For heavy and medium users,contact Kenya Data Networks to see if you can access their network at 3k per month. If you are out of reach of their butterfly network,you might incur installation costs. Otherwise,prepare for the 4k per month Zain network,which seems to have won accolades everywhere for been slow.

Orange were to move to 3G and at Ksh. 1/= per MB looks like a good deal. Anyone with a recent experience on this Orange inet development?

For those using Linux-based operating systems,you can use any modem with any network... all you need to do is to configure the modem with you ISP info be it zain,suffericon or orange.

Speeds are relative to plenty of factors: geography/relief,distance from transmitter station(s),number of active users in your region,your physical location (uko basement ama juu ya electricity post),interference from other electrical equipment etc. In the end,it’s not the speed that matters but the period/length of uptime and customer care response. You may be on 3G and get speeds of 1kbps. You may also be on edge and get 256kbps speeds. Whenever an ISP promises 3.2Mbps (or any other speed),divide that by three and you'll get the practical speed you may get on a really good day.
