Tired of coming accross so many grammatical, spelling mistakes and misrepresentation of facts in Kenyan mainstream dailies, notably the East African Standard,I cannot help but wonder whether there are no real journalists around and where these imposters are recruited from.

Today in the EAS,referring to a drug rehab centre (Red hill) as an alcoholic plant. The whole story is to the very best a poor story (and is representative of many other that have been published today and before). Incoherent, full stop.

Then they (yesterday) go head to print things like. ' The United Nations Environment Programme (Unep),the only UN headquarters in the Third World'. These guys cannot tell the difference between the UN Office in Nairobi (UNON),which houses Kenya country offices of most UN Funds and agencies as well as the HQs of UNEP and UN-HABITAT,and UNEP or they think these can be used interchangeably.

You will come accross things like 'Nairobi University' (when it should be The University of Nairobi),the Catholic Archbishop of Nairobi being referred to as the head of the Catholic church in Kenya and UNEP complex (damn it's either the UNON complex or the UN complex in Nairobi). The list is endless.

Sample this. 'The diplomats also reportedly said western governments were nevertheless determined the coalition should not collapse',in todays online edition.

Come on!! Aren't there editors to work on these stories before the usual kind of crap ends up on the news stands?

...not very long time ago, teaching used to the career for those who did not have anything else to do. Not any more. Now,jornalism has become a career for those who can't get anything else to do. All you need to do is get a pen and a notebook and there you are attending Alfred Mutua's thursday briefings as freelance journalist!!!

Some media houses are even asking ladies to swing their arses around as part of the TV presenters interview. Woe unto you if your behind is not full...!!!

...you mean there are people who read the Standard with seriousness?

..and KTN is not any better....I still remember the story of 'the government changing the course of River Tana'

Let me tell you my friend.

I have come to one conclusion: kenyan journalists are either empty debes or full of ****! Except Rama Nyang maybe.

At one time,we were looking for people to fill a communications-type/marketing-type position. A guy/chic would pose as a 'leading' journalist and show you what he/she has written in a major daily.

But ask him/her to write something short on the fly and you wouldn't believe. The number of 'as of in it is that' errors left us embarrassed. Seriously! Hata ukimpatia
one hour hawesmek.

Out of 50 candidates for the job, journalists were at the bottom of the pile. Sorry to the press-men on SK but that is real right there.Want more proof? Doesn't it surprise you that among active SK users,I am yet to see someone come out to say they are a journalist? Other than @Eli of course who is an ex- and always distances himself from the profession at every opportunity. LOL. (Eli you are my pal. Much love dude)

But I stand corrected.

Are there journalists in Kenya?

To me they sound like members of ODM or PNU propaganda commitees.

I happened on some guy on Nation TV last night talking to the Town Clerk. The questions were pedestrian. But touching the guy in an interview just made my day.

The day before, the topic was,Kenyan prostitutes making a lot of money because of the boycott. The story was not supported by any scientific evidence other than a fat pro saying she's loaded. Come on please. I stopped watching KTN because of baseless allegations made by journalists now even NTV is becoming KTN 2.

Read the newspapers. They actually give a guy called smita or something a whole column. You wonder why Kenyans can't speak in English,Swahili or their mother To-Ngues.

The hit is Mutahi Ngunyi who is so full of his self importance he should be called Martin Ogwenyi. Must always quote some roman empire story. Just because he reads Shakespeare does not make him deserve a whole post. Aiii.

This topic should be banned for lying (sorry that was unpaliamentary). For being unpaliamentary and unskniary. There are no journalists in Kenya. So the premise for this whole topic is declared invalid.

Oh boy,

A spell check is free with word. If those are 'western' standards, then we have a very serious problem.

Kenyan journalists are bad Period! There was a paper called Taifa Leo sometime back which was a template for swahili speaking. In fact,I remember students being adviced to read it if they were to pass swahili exams.

Now we have some fools who can't speak English,Swahili or even sheng as writers and journalists. If those are western standards, again I say,I am sorry. Being pro active,I don't read or watch anything from these guys. I love Papa Shirandula. It is a better alternative to watching some guy trying to tweng in the mode of those morning show radio hosts and calling themselves journalists. Upus!

If I may ask what is wrong in referring to the University of Nairobi as Nairobi University? I thought the latter is a given name of the former? With respect I think in that particular issue you are really nit-picking.

I took a journalism class in college and I remember we were given something called a 'Style Book' and told each paper must have one,to guide writers on the standards of the paper - right down to spelling, punctuation etc including whether to call it University of xx as opposed to xx University. Do our mainstream media have these?
Regarding interviewers lacking facts of the matters in hand, look for the Jack Nicholson movie 'Broadcast News'. The editors behind the scene compose the questions, and merely ask the presenter through his earpiece to mouth them, the presenter ending up looking sharp as hell. Don't be surprised that the celebrated Larry King might not have an idea of what he speaks about so eloquently.
