100 feared dead on the ferry that had over 500 on board. About 200 rescued including 60 children.
Reminds me of our mtongwe ferry disaster over a decade ago.

Bad show by Kenya. We are the country closest to the scene, we have a fully functioning Navy and all we can do is send condolences - hapa sijivunii kuwa Mkenya.

MV Spice's engines started running in 1969. The age is not really an issue but this vessels was a disaster in waiting. It was recently (should be 2009) rescued by a US vessel when it stalled on the unforgiving high seas and you should know the rescue package included a donation of fuel.

But I do wonder, how old are those rusty things plying the Likoni channel. Or rather, how well maintained are they? I have also seen similar rusty vessels in the Lake Victoria and one Mbita Ferry where a loaded fuel tankers are frequently loaded alongside other cars and hundreds of passengers for a 50 minutes ride accross the deep waters of the Lake

I too expected more than just condolences from Zanzibar's neighbours and the Anti-piracy force stationed in the Indian Ocean.
