please innovate and go into some other area - you'd not like to have a killer idea and after a few weeks every Tom Dick and Harry is doing it...no offence. I heard abt this person more than three years ago...

You need not worry about the copy paste of this idea because I'm sure he got it from a guy featured in yesterday's Nation or whoever told you about it read the article. I suggest you maybe visit his garage and pop some questions...

BBI will solve it

I know - I saw the article and have known abt this person for years...all I am saying is we should be more innovative.

Just to give an example of the expo/stalls - everyone is doing the same thing - everyone is undercutting each other...everything can be found everywhere and its no longer unique - there is no USP and everyone loses.

The winners are in real estate - collecting 10x higher rent on the same area as a single tenant.

We need to innovate and not imitate...if there is GREAT demand, then by all means meet the demand and have something added that you do.

There is no patent for that idea. The guy admits he got the idea from the net. Just do something to differentiate your product.

This reminds me of SK Macharia's success in media. In 2000, Rose Kimotho launched the first private owned vernacular station-Kameme FM. Many wondered where she would get content because before this vernacular radio meant 2hrs from 5-7am then later 8pm to midnight(Kikuyu service under KBC Central Station, whose frequency was shared with Maasai, Embu and Kamba). But here she was promising 24hr vernacular service!

Many feared Kameme would close down. However, Kameme was an instant success and probably Rose did not foresee competition. She even named her station Kameme which means radio in Gikuyu! Then SK launched Inooro FM. The station faltered first before he invested in buying big names in media then and eventually overtook Kameme.

Today, SK's Royal Media owns not just Inooro but a constellation of other vernacular stations!!

After all, the Kikuyu proverb says, Ng'ombe itininanagira nyeki-There's enough for every cow in the herd.smile

But not when we think of the Tragedy of the commons - thats the point I have tried to make above. It might be a non sequitir somewhat, but when too many people start doing the same thing, then its value gets diminished (supply and demand). Think of cyber cafes, simu ya jamii, matatus, etc - most people in these sectirs are hurting - competition is intense, there is no longer any unique value addition, there is ZERO creativity - it becomes a fad - everyone jumps on the band wagon - the early movers liquidate and leave the late comers struggling to realise an el dorado.

I think that is one of Kenya's peculiar habits that MJ described. See how many fell for the pyramid scheme? See how many went into rabbit farming (now we have experts on rabbits but still ZERO consumers), etc etc etc...

I give him even more marks for starting a Luo station and making it a hit at a time when ethnic tension was so heavy you could not only smell it but touch it.
