what would be the ideal value for a 504 Station Wagon - about 12-14 years old and in fairly decent condition. What would you pay for such a car?

Is there great demand for this as a matatu?

The going rate depending on the condition is about 300K give or take, they are no longer viable as matatus since the entrance of the 'Kangaroo' toyota's..unless you take them to Kisumu i guess...

P/S
At the age you are specifying it will seem to be an import which is a minus as far as value is concerened

Not an import - locally assembled...so far I have seen between 270-320 for well kept ones - one previous owner - some parastatal or other careful owners that replaced and not repaired.

Okay, thats the price reange, the issue with them is the maintenence, with the shutting down of marshalls and the concept/theory (sadly true) that a (newer) toyota can do anything the old peugeot's can do better, and at a cheaper rate is partly the reason for its demise....And of course, anytime you take it to Ocieng for wiring, all he can tell u is 'modificasion'...

modificasion Laughing out loudly

That's the beauty with these old relics - wiring is not an issue as it is with newer carsPray . I'd not be a stranger to the wiring...indeed I'm intimate with other parts of it...

And if I may add, I do not think there is a Toyota in the same class that can do what a Peugeot can - maybe when we look at Toyota Hilux and such...but in terms of durability, longevity, ground clearance, etc and where roads are a myth...no comparison. Even in a collision - the toyota compares favourably with a beer can...

In the four years I have had a 504 saloon I have not experienced cooling issues. Perhaps some owner do not bleed the cooling system properly

i.e.
- wait for engine to cool completely,
- flip lever inside the car on dashboard to "hot" to allow the heater radiator to flow with the rest,
- top up radiator,
- open bleeding screw slowly and listen to the hissing as air comes out, then open completely and watch coolant flow until it no longer has bubbles
- keep topping up radiator...
- close bleeding screw tight.
- Finally ensure the coolant is not all the way to the neck - it needs space for the watere to expand when it heats up. if you do not leave room for expansion - the radiator cap will give in to the pressure and release coolant when hot. If this happens, and then it is allowed to cool, it will suck in air - and there is the culprit.

Also, 504's have been known as fast cars - but better not to stay at 100kph for sustained periods. I have driven 2000km (over 3-4 days) at an average of 80kph without looking at the radiator and on return the water level was fine.

TLC...treat a 504 like a lady...and she will not let you down ;-)
