Do you currently hold and intend to hold your 50,000+ shares in any of the above stocks until June 2012? Would you like an additional amount over and above the dividend?
For every month you lend your stock, you'll earn a fee.

I believe we can work on a legally-secure arrangement of mutual benefit. Contact me on mainatathotmaildotcom if interested

Hisah/Mwezekeji just short selling not naked short-selling. Big difference.
Sparkling-its 50k shares. Lower amount might be worth the deal.
QW/Gatoho, please don't feel any pressure to comment on every thread...The outcome might not show your best side.

Slykat-no risk for the holder of the shares. Your broker will act as the custodian as he does today. The legal agreement will specify how long you will lend the shares to me for; what happens if one of us wants to terminate the agreement before the end of the specified period and what happens if the prices move against me the borrower.

Short selling also known as going short is the opposite of going long also known as buying at the NSE. I do both.

Sorry but this is not Ukora. It is practiced in many countries. As indicated above, shorting is a legal business involving managing someone else shares where they can trade with your shares as they wish and pay you an agreed premium whether they make money or not.If shares depreciate, then they are obliged to pay you the total agreed sum. If they make profit...well, that is what took them there in the first place. They benefit, and you too

I was being cheeky by including 'naked'... It tends to fry counters to juicy discounts smile Money has no morals...

CMA will ban short selling even when it doesn't exist smile

But seriously CMA should have it in place. They can ban the 'naked' version, which tends to be fraudulent.
CMA should introduce index trading. I'm being selfish here since I trade indices more than stocks thus avoiding too much work trying to read goosed up P&Ls of firms.

There are a number of counters that should have been shorted permanently (4 yrs ago) like paka, which is going nowhere!
This yr it was obvious banks were a shorting target even with 'good' results, but many still don't understand why... Maybe you can tell them why you have 3 banks on your list...

Anybody else that thinks short selling & index trading should be introduced apart from @mwekezaji & @mainat & the infamous @ybc...

imho the cma (like most law and order bodies in kenya) does not have the skills, vigilance and scrutiny to monitor n avoid misuse of market derivatives. If some manager decides to short a stock and puts up a gang of other managers to drive the share price down, it would take the regulator forever to uncover the scum unlike in good governance systems where insider trading and fraudulent trades are uncovered before the bastard is in some Pacific island sippin on gin n juice.

All the same, shorts, futures, indices etc are good when well regulated or as W.B sez, "are weapons of mass destruction".

Ps. Currently Germany's placed a ban on short selling.

Pls note what has been banned in most of the EU is naked short selling.
The rationale for short selling is the same as for going and as simple. If you think that the NSE will remain bearish for at least another 9-12 months, you offer those who want to stay long an opportunity an additional similar amount to what they'll from the dividend. You are holding on because you know the market will recover in 2013. You'd like to average down. Short-selling offers you the opportunity. And some cash to do it.

The CMA has no rules on short-selling though a fair number of NSE investors do it. Neither does have any rules on marginal lending which is now widely practised i.e. when you get given a loan by Equity to buy shares in an IPO. Marginal lending in the west is specifically not allowed for most retail investors unless they've taken professional advice.

QW you are welcome to short Equity all the way to 12 infact. I'll lend you my shares to help you along. And charge you ofcourse.
NSE will fall for a while yet. You may as well benefit while you wait for the uplift in 2013.

@MainaT.

I see a problem here. I suppose you would be shorting at current prices and guaranteeing that plus amt equal to dividend. Now, at this point in the NSE, sb may have bought most of the stocks at prices significantly higher than current prices. Wouldn't such a holder rather sit it out and gain more on the upturn,in the fullness of time?
