In the 90s it was extremely risky investing in NBI. Hopefully things will change for Kisumu. I think Nyanza professionals would be able to make a difference if it wasnt for the constant bickering.@Kularaha...pliz toboa, what projects are these?
@mukoya, unfortunately am not selling...those pieces are my pension security. I got no faith anymore in govt pension systems

If the higher the risk the higher the returns, then its a good place to put your money. But I wouldnt construct anything, maybe speculate on land or some agriculture.

@2012 why not you can make money in all these areas so long as you know how to manage your risks. there are people who deal with higher risks can u imagine those invest in charter flights to baghdad now thats risk they are making good money still

@jamplu, whatever profession you're in I'm sure there's an opportunity for you in Baghdad and I'm sure it would pay you ten times what you're earning now... So have you applied for a job there?

There are enough opportunities within region (EA). My point is don't let opportunities pass you just because of what someone went through 4 years ago that's not the spirit of an investor. i know someone who has 5 acres of land in kisumu worth over 20times what he bought it for and nothing happened to his investment he told me he's holding it for speculative purposes.

1) Very heartless, you need to soul search, seriously.

@ Eco Heartless! I don't think so...I know what it is like to desperately look for seats in any available flight to nairobi half of my family was in Kisumu and they still went back. Are they foolish no there are opportunities in Kisumu.

I also don't find @Eco heartless that's the nature of business the ruthless pursuit of profit. I know some guys who after the violence started as the workers were busy fighting on the streets just packed the entire factory in containers and shipped out everything onto the high seas. The workers were so shocked when they came back to find an empty warehouse. That's business nothing personal

I had a rental house here but luckily,it survived the vilonce because it was occupied by a seasider.I sold it plus the tenant in August of 2008 and took to the high hills....Never!...but if i were too,a guest house would be most ideal.

I understand the issues raised and the horrific experiences. But still i believe there is also a lot of biased opinion against Kisumu. It may be political or tribal..i just cant figure it out. This is a very tolerant city which has allowed all tribes and races to set shop. 2008 was bad...yes...but can we really continously use this as a yardstick. There are other flourishing towns in Kenya which have a deadly intolerance to so called "outsiders".

invest in something that won't burn..or something that will resist damage from flying misiles..on a serious note,a friend of mine has many beach plots in kisumu, and plans to build a kisumu sun and sands hotel, luckily he's a resident of kisumu county

just in case u might not want to invest in Kisumu, please consider Homa Bay County (from Mfangano, Remba, Rusinga Islands to to Ndhiwa (sugarcane)Kendu Bay (fish, simsim, groundnuts)to Rangwe (pineapples) to Oyugis (maize, tea, coffee, sweet potatoes). With the largest shoreline of Lake Victoria in Kenya; good climate and a welcoming population...think about it! You can also access Ug and Tz directly via the lake.
