My understanding is that each engine has a maximum number of cycles after which they would have to be replaced. Aircraft are designed with multiple engines, but able to make emergency landing with only 1 engine (and sometimes none). Hence engines should be more of a maintenance cost issue than a safety issue. More important are the vertical and horizontal stabilizers, wings (slats & flaps), landing gear and fuselage integrity (risk of decompression) that matter more. And these of course come with age. A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work

[/quote] This begs the question for protectionism otherwise signalling the demise of small african airlines.Most african airlines cannot land in Europe or elsewhere due to safety concerns! Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen today!

Mcreggae, 3 years and half a decade are close but thanks for the correction. I recall flying on KQ's Scania, fokker F27 and Fokker 50 (there was one christened "Nam Lolwe"). I know most airliners are subjected to Checks after a defined number of hours. some like the class C check require withdarawal of aicraft from service for some time. I don't know if all the sausages we see flying around are subject to the same. But like has been said, engines are often replaced. What about metal fatigue or landing gear failures? Haven't you heard of aircrafts that just break up in the air or at touchdown- mostly due to metal fatigue-Congo, Nigeria e.t.c. How settled would you feel if the cabin of the aircraft your in rattles and vibrates so badly during the taxi stage? I have at times wished I could pull the "handbrake" and alight.

I have just checked Ryanair's (Europe's largest budget airline) website and have seen London to Frankfurt flights advertised at £9.99 I.e. Ksh. 1,400. How do they do it? Seems Nbi - Ksm at Ksh. 2k is too much. Should be 500 Bob.
