BTW; does anyone operate KSM-MSA direct flights?

I don't think there are any scheduled direct KSM-MSA flights they have to be via NBO.On the other hand what happens to ATR planes ? Majority of Fly 540 fleet are propeller planes. With introduction of fuel effecient jets such as crjs & embraers, the choice of travel will surely shift to jets!

Check your facts. the ATR-42 and ATR 72 are very fuel efficient. Only issue i guess are the low mach speeds. I bet the ATR-72 is comparably more fuel efficient than the E170 although slower

My take is that on the domestic front, any airline seekign to dominate must vary its fleets to include both regional fuel efficient regional jets (E 190/170, Canadair/CRJ, AVro etc) and fuel efficient "crop dusters" such as the beechcraft, de Haviland Dash and SAAB which can land in places such as Loki, Lodwar, Kitale, Bungoma e.t.c. KQ got rid of its last propeller have a decade ago in a bid to maintain an all jet fleet.

However, the key issues remain safety. Fact is majority of budget carriers are bound use ancient aircraft, and knowing that domestic flights involve much more compression cycles, landing and take off cycles than long haul liners, and therefore prone to higher rates of wear.

Back to the main issue, 2K for MSA-KSM is a pipe dream. Why would a sino-carrier be allow to do flights begining and termination in Kenya?

Should the age of the aircraft really matter safety wise? My understanding is that each engine has a maximum number of cycles after which they would have to be replaced.

Aircraft are designed with multiple engines, but able to make emergency landing with only 1 engine (and sometimes none). Hence engines should be more of a maintenance cost issue than a safety issue.

More important are the vertical and horizontal stabilizers, wings (slats & flaps), landing gear and fuselage integrity (risk of decompression) that matter more. And these of course come with age.

This begs the question for protectionism otherwise signalling the demise of small african airlines. Most african airlines cannot land in Europe or elsewhere due to safety concerns!
