kiriita wrote:@Djinn,
Interesting you should ask this - I have always thought there should be a real road across the Aberdares road between say Githumu/Kigumo/Kangare and Njabini/Engineer. Am told butchers from the former used to leave in the morning and return in the evening with beef cattle from Kinangop. On foot.
From those same accounts though, the road can only be considered decent by one seeking to plot a route for Rhino Charge and with an appropriate vehicle. From Murang'a your best bet is Murang'a - Sagana [or Kiriaini-Othaya, for some twists]- Nyeri - Nyahururu - Nakuru. The Nyeri - Nyahururu road is under repair and the half or so of it that is yet to be done has quite a fair share potholes.
I truly envy your sense/spirit of adventure. @Kiriita - thanks. Going via Nyeri would be an option but depends on how late I leave Muranga...was hoping to make a somewhat short evening drive and lay over in Naivasha or Nakuru. The Nyeri leg will definitely add considerable time to the trip so may consider a stop over in Nyeri overnight and a very early start the next day.

Isnt there a road that cuts across from Thika to join the Nbi-Nakuru road somewhere near Kimende ??
Guka, where are you?

Separately, any reason why google has indicated Nbi-Nakuru Rd as Namanga Road on google maps or its simply a mistake?

@Kiriita, Very correct.I was mildly amused some years back to find that we have Githumu on either side of Aberdares. As the tale goes, this foot road has been in existence for many years.Djinn has a choice in the Murang'a-Kiria-ini-Othaya-Mweiga Nyahururu-Subukia-Nakuru road depending on how close he is to Murang'a town. @Mpenzi, Indeed there are two roads joining Thika town (highway) with the A104 highway. The first goes over the Thika round about west to Kiawabuga, through Gatamaiyo forest-Magumu and the flyover just before Kinungi.....The other access is at Ruiru, west via Kimathi,Githunguri and joins A104 at uplands. The former is fairly accessible but......thugs in the forest....don't try even though it's the shortest. @Djinn, You have a choice of three roads. It's a pity that the Outspan-Geta road (Over the Aberdares0 is yet to take shape due to NEMA concerns. It certainly will be the shortest route to A104 via Engineer to Naivasha (52 Kilometres from Outspan to Geta Gate).Hope this helps. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Like I have said before, Njunge should do a book "Know Kenya" that sets forth this info on these panya routes that he reels out so effortlessly

Guka, where are you? @Mpenzi - I was kinda looking both at saving on the distance and exploring new roads - if I come up to Thika and cut across, it may not offer much savings in distance and I'd have to double back part of the distance I went. But I will keep that on the table for now.

@Mpenzi, Ahsante....Time.Do i have enough to sit and write?.There is still more to explore and the book may have to wait...lol Djinn, Othaya-Nyeri-Nyahururu-Nakuru would be cheaper in terms of fuel and time....Caution though.Avoid Nairutia-Ndaragwa forest stretch after 3PM. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Quick update:
Thika Road - overpass at Museum now open (for those that live not in NBI) - towards Forest Road - but you still need to make a detour behind Stima Plaza/Inoorero Centre to rejoin Forest Road. From Pangani still some diversions. Good sections opened up between Muthaiga and GSU. Kasarani overpass opened up. A bit risky towards Githurai - lanes not marked and drivers untamed.
Did not do the Nyeri-Nakuru detour
Mau Summit to Malaba - same old lumpy sections near burnt forest. Eldoret to Turbo - the road is getting worse - pot holes. Lost my grille somewhere along that strech (which led to interesting questions from the Ug police who alluded to a hit and run....hmmm). Same "staircase" at Kipkarren. Some sections between Webuye and Bungoma are under repair - short and very passable murram diversions, not more than 1km each.
Closer to Malaba border the road is just as lumpy as near burnt forest/elburgon.
Malaba-Kampala - Same old...same old cops. Around Kampala they have built some bypasses so no need to cut through the city if going to certain surburbs or out of town (Mbarara, Fort Portal).
Kampala- Kyenjojo (40km from Fort Portal) - more sections have been opened up - really good roads from the halfway point albeit dangerous thanks to speeding buses and trucks from DRC.
Lost a grille, a wiper (in a very heavy downpour) and the ability to close the co-driver's window.

@Djinn, I would do anything to avoid Malaba-Bungoma stretch. Is there no contractor on the road?.....Maybe next time you can try Malaba-Bungoma-kakamega-Chavakali-Kapsabet-Lessos-Matharu route.Matharu is where Kapsabet road joins the Eldoret-Nakuru highway.....This alternative route is quite fair and i can assure you'll get home with all your car parts...smooth Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

I used the road a few weeks ago and construction is underway......btw mau summit kericho kisumu constriction is also underway ....just hope hi maneno ya kura haitasimamisha kazi..... update president set president = speaker where president is null

I wanted to use this but I was advised by some matatu drivers at Mau summit, that Eldoret - Malaba is better

Guka has a wealth of information, coupled with humour and a flair for writing. @Guka - do it! Not a book but perhaps a structured travel blog where you look at each province and all the roads from the As to the C's (A104, B1, etc). You can then get people like SCOM, Shell, Total, KTB, Tour operators to advertise. You can have it overlaid on google maps and also have adverts based on locations - e.g. If I am looking for a road between Thika and Matuu, perhaps a small tented camp can place an ad the moment I make that query - etc etc. So - tour operators, hotels/lodgings, petrol dealers, etc etc. I think it would be an invaluable resource. I am sure you can rig a laptop onto your Mercedes Actros dashboard

@Toxicity - they HAVE started work on the Eldoret - Malaba section - H Young have spilt a lot of equipment at various places (I think about 5 spots are on going). I'd say they are moving faster than the guys doing Mau-Summit - Kisumu Road.

Also, the Eldoret Malaba road might not be GOK funded but World Bank as part of the Northern Corridor project - Mombasa, Malaba onward through Uganda (the A104 still runs into Uganda to Kampala) and onward to Rwanda and DRC. The Mombasa Road project was part of the Northern Corridor project...

@Djinn/Danas, Thanks guys. Will give it a thought although you realise i am tech crap...lol.True Djinn, that is the road.I want to believe the Matatu driver was wrong.I agree there are a few grey areas between Matharu and Lessos but that's just about it.The rest is Mwaa all the way to Bungoma via Chavakali/Kakamega.....BTW,i know of a shortcut earth road just after Kapsabet which passes through Kakamega forest-Lirhanda-Savona Isle resort and joins Kisumu-Kakamega road at the junction to Kakamega General Hospital.....try it some day if you are as adventurous . Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.
