I am not Alfred Mutua's fan but the press grossly misrepresented his statement about the drought/hunger/starvation in Kenya. I watched the full unedited clip and it's totally different from what the press had us believe. He was quoted out of context.

The guy was not trying to say that there were no deaths occasioned by starvation. He was saying that the government does not have the official figures and he was appealing to the press, NGOs, health workers etc. to provide information on the confirmed deaths so that the government can investigate and hold people into account!

No that I am saying anything new but we have a bure kabisa press. They just wanted to attack Mutua or further their own agendas. Imagine saying something like "Those who don't believe, say there is no God." and in the evening news they bring a clip of you saying "There is no God."!!!

I have tried to search for videos that come close to what I watched and I think the two below are closest.

Video One - Shorter Version

Video Two - Longer Version

If i were a politician or held a political seat, i would give short statements to avoid this. But the journalists will always get something to go round and paint you the way thay want.

The media ought to realize that a lot of faith is bestowed upon it by the people. It is wrong for them to behave like the very politicians they should serve to keep in check. Their reportage may have been free, but it was certainly not fair.

It wouldn't help. You will say "Some people are saying I will not vie in 2012" and on the news they will only show you saying you "I will not vie in 2012"

The next day you will be very pissed and say "I don't need the media. Kenyans know me well" and it will be edited and in the news you will be shown saying "I don't need Kenyans!" Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly

@seppuku.
The trust we have entrusted the media with is our own liking. Not every kenyan takes what we hear on news as gospel truth, those who cared to know the truth (like wazuans) went ahead to get the entire footage and not just relly on the 20 second extract that was flashed to us.

The provincial administration

village elder --> Sub chief --> chief....

Up to that level there is no excuse for the 'government' not to have any information or figures, even that which it does not require.

I thought the thread is about whether Mutua was misquoted or not. Or do you want to misquote him by saying that he was giving excuses? I have not seen him giving excuses.

In fact, he almost seemed to be critical of government.

The damage is already done. This time the media has gone too far. I hold no brief for the man but the whole of the media fraternity should offer him an apology.

@Tassia, the point is, is Alfy admitting that government has no machinery to know how many persons have died from hunger? the police who was interviewed on radio even admitting that he saw children suckling from there dead mother, Redcross coming out with persons who had died...and Mutua saying he has no "official" figures!!!??? The anger directed at Alfy was on his comments about death from hunger...

Watched the shorter video. He tried to absolve the higher ups in the government by throwing those on its lower end under the bus. He was still doing PR for the government while Kenyans are dying from hunger.

Personally I feel he got what he invited and deserved in this particular scenario. Better off contributing the little that I can to Red Cross than getting all worked up in his defence. I feel nothing for him.

I am saying the village elder, as part of government, had to know. Hence the 'government' knew....'government' does not start in Nairobi you know. Or should it have been on a letter head?

Information leaves Nairobi to the remotest areas, right?

Why not vice versa, innit?

I guess we are all entitled to interpret Mutua's statement they way we feel it suits us best. We do not have to persuade any one to agree with our view. In any case, would persuading any one to agree with our views help in feeding anyone. Let's do what we can do to help. Everyone including ourselves have their strong points and their weak points and that is what makes us humans.

So does Alfred want the 'wananchi' to go and do a 'thorough research' on how many people have died of hunger then table the same to him? So will the 'government' go on to let people die of hunger until 'someone' can provide them with 'official figures'?

C'mon guys we are being fed with loads of BS!!
