For guard dogs.... german shepherds-GS are a cut above the rest. discipline wise,strength and are faithful to the master till they die. remember they have to eat proper... cooked... at the right time...not Mutura from your local joint. Training and medical care is a must,hence the cost.

expect to spend not less than 30k per puppy for a guard dog. verify the papers too... If you are good at it,you could make money from da b****es too....

and now a sad story..... 3 burglars break into some residence and meet their match. Two GS on guard attack as expected,wrestle one chap to the ground and lock the jaw,the other rarua's the villain big time . one GS is stabbed 3 times on the neck but will not let go off the villain's neck. The other 2 burglars run abandoning their accomplice. sadly by the time the master is on the scene,to issue instructions,both the dog and the villain have bled to various stages of death....the dog finally died.. the grief on the other dog that kept howling like a human being is discernable up to today. Talk of a man's best friend.

pls no mischief intended but why does a dog need a certificate?

@Blackberry - certificate is really where you record vaccination history etc. Its especially useful if for justifiable reasons your dog bites someone - then you have your vaccination record handy and can prove the dog is not rabid and rather was either provoked or was defending your property or your family. In Nairobi you also need a metal tag issued by NCC to affix to the collar. They usually go around sometimes collecting strays (and sometimes they bait dogs with poisoned meat) - no tag,and your dog could get impounded.

I read somewhere that the Boerboels (South African)loose memory as they age and can even attack the owner. GSD and rottweilers are good guard/pet dogs

@Magigi - good you have opted for the GSD - now regarding justification,and I am really serious about this part (i.e. not making up wishy washy excuses) 1) It will teach your boy to be responsible - he will need to care for it (feed it,wash it,make sure its habitat is clean,train it,etc and thus learn greater appreciation of what you and Mrs Magigi go through) 2) You will have security - a GSD is very intelligent and loyal. 3)It will keep your kid occupied - thus away from TV,playstation,influence from bad kids,drugs,idleness. By investing in this and putting your kid on the right path in life,it will invariably have a long term impact,more than what 30,000 will have in the near term.


@Informer - hmm...Rottweilers are OK dogs but there are cases where some suffer dementia and become extremely aggressive. And then they need to be put down. I visited KSPCA when the Artur brother's Rottweilers were kept in custody and was told as much by the KSPCA people.
