Wends, he or she is selling OTC or something close to that hence the seller can actually walk to the share registrar's (or broker's office) office accompanied by the willing buyer...to authenticate the share certificate of course.... or, what do you mean by "proper channel"

asked him to state a price and he said I should go first.

So I offered 50.00/=
and he said he's only selling for more than 70.00/=

And he has 2,400 shares

I forget what the IPO price for Deacons was but 50/- is a bargain!
I like the brand but it will be a tough 2 years though it s consolidating its position in all the major malls...

Deacons last placed at Ksh62.50, why would you be selling at 20%?

As Kenya's middle class grows I admit the 'reasons' that Deacons gave in their prospectus make sense. It's all about 'aspirational' shopping. Yes, you can get much cheaper used stuff but the kids want the 'now' item which they see on TV/Movies in real time!

Anyway, I passed by some Deacons stores to have a look. Amazing! They were quite busy even when Kenyans are having it rough. Of course, profits may stall (like many other firms) in 2011-12 but the potential is there.

BTW, the Prospectus was all about the 'women' so Deacons does not really care about me!

Indeed the potential is there as Kenya's middle class continues to grow.

At this point in time Kshs 70 for the Deacons share is way too pricey. Last year's EPS was 5.28 with a dividend of 1.20. This implies paying a PE of almost 14 for a non listed counter with a dividend yield of less than 2%.

Besides, I am not sure I can trust these guys anyway. On November 17th 2010, they released a fact sheet projecting PAT of 149 million. Actual full year results turned out to be only 109 million, a whole 40 million shillings short of their forecast. This was too big an error on their forecasts, having already got the ACTUAL figures for 10 months. This gives me the impression that these guys are either very poor in their forecasting or they deliberately misled would be investors.

I am glad I followed my instincts and gave this one a miss.

@mwanahisa - Good points.

There are better priced shares in the market but as a leader in its sector, I see Deacons will grow faster than its rivals.

Of course, growth is not profits.
