Thunderstorms that rise to such heights r usually gigantic n quite dangerous. If lightning is the cause,n assuming it damaged the electrical system,then that is the kind costs we have to pay 4 technology...the Fly-By-Wire system....Imagine losing ctrl of such a machine at over 10km AMSL!

Everyone for himself but mtibe for us all

it's unfortunate what has transpired to the AF 447..there is a lot of speculation as to what happened to the aircraft but a series of unfortunate events led to all this.

First and foremost yesterday was the beginning of the Hurricane season in the region...we have what we call the ITCZ ( Inter Tropical Convergence Zone) and the winds are pushing from the South..and this creates very strong winds,rain and lightening...ofcourse aircrafts are made to withstand lightening bolts event upto 300,000 amps and since the main fuselage is actually made of aluminium.

The pilots are actually able to navigate round this pockets of thunderstorm areas and since most of them fly at a very high altitude making it easier to avoid most of this thunderous areas...

This seems it was very unlikely/unfortunate scenario where lightening struck the aircraft either in the nose..(this has a radar that detects weather upto 100miles ahead) the vertical stabilizer,or even the horizantal...one..there could be a myriad of factors..only time will tell.

it's very likely we may never know what happened as the reason for the palne 'dissapearing' is coz the black boz is not emiting any signal as it is supposed to and most likely it's at the bottom of the ocean. As we call it in Aviaiton 'weather' is a catastrophic element in flying.

@obi

Njunge is right about the satellites..since Columbia and 9/11..all MFO'S are tracked and monitored by various satellites round the world...including that balloon safari trip in the mara.

The key to such catastrophes is information management. When 507 crashed,the KQ Control Centre knew immediately - looking for wreakage blah blah was info mgt. Drip it slowly and let it sink. Whoever says Africa will not take the blame,think twice. They are already saying control had been handed over to Senegal.

Now c'mon dear Gordon.....!!.They might want to find some faults with the Senegalese or something close to Africa but pray,what was Wade and his countrymen supposed to do??........Africans are not good at arresting lightenings at 10 kms above ground.I know.Am one of them...........-:))

@GGekko: I knew this would happen. Everything bad is usually thrown to Africa. You see,now a catastrophe that has taken place thousands of miles away is being blamed on Africa!!!

@Njung'e: Before flying through that turbuent area,they shold have asked Africa for the services of a rain maker to briefly stop the rains...

@njunge,
This is the line from Aviation Safety. The plane was expected at TASIL at 2.20 where control was to go to Dakar. The plane last communicated at 2.14. It was lost while still under Rio control,so why do Aviation Safety say TASIL is at the border with Dakar FIR? Bold and underline my own.

An Air France Airbus A330-200 went missing on transatlantic flight from Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport,RJ (GIG) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. The airplane carried 12 crew members and 216 passengers. Flight AF447 departed at 19:03 local time (May 31) from Rio de Janeiro (GIG). Last radio contact with the flight was at 01:33 UTC. The crew was in contact with the Atlantic Area Control Centre (CINDACTA III) when the flight reported over the INTOL waypoint,estimating TASIL at 02:20 UTC. INTOL is an RNAV waypoint located in the Atlantic Ocean,565 km from Natal,Brazil. The TASIL waypoint is located 1228 kilometers from Natal. TASIL is at the border of the Recife FIR and Dakar Oceanic FIR. At 01:48 UTC the aircraft went out of the radar coverage of CINDACTA III,Fernando de Noronha. Information indicated that the aircraft flew normally at FL350 and a speed of 453 kts. The aircraft reportedly went through a thunderstorm with strong turbulence at 02:00 UTC. An automated message was delivered by 02:14 UTC indicating a loss of pressurization and failure in the electrical system,the Brazilian Ministry of Defence reported. A search was initiated by Brazilian authorities at 05:33 UTC. The airplane has not yet been found; the fatality index is feared,not confirmed.

Here's a short quiz.
Below is a list of nationalities of passenger on the ill fated flight. Guess which seven people are likely to get (if not already getting) a thorough background check?

The airline company identified the nationalities of the victims as two Americans,an Argentinean,an Austrian,a Belgian,58 Brazilians,five British,a Canadian,nine Chinese,a Croatian,a Dane,a Dutch,an Estonian,a Filipino,61 French,a Gambian,26 Germans,four Hungarians,three Irish,one Icelandic,nine Italians,five Lebanese,two Moroccans,three Norwegians,two Polish,one Romanian,one Russian,three Slovakian,two Spanish,one Swedish,six Swiss and one Turk.
