26 is not doable considering the current market conditions. If the good results has only triggered 3% gain is any record to go buy.

I dont have any holding in Equity, but if there is a share which can defy all, this it.At 23.75 now and demand seven times supply let us see.

will this company dislodge safaricom as the most profitable company...I kind of believe it now..its possible.

The agency banking is taking shape and once it fully takes off EB staff should prepare themselves for a serious downsizing giving way for a new crop of risk managers.

The only thing that may affect the growth of this bank might be as many of wazuan are saying inflation and the uncertainties of 2012 elections.

One thing I like about this bank(although I dont have any of its shares) is the brand loyalty and its simplified business.

The CEO had indicated sometime back they are only utilizing about 20% of its IT capacity...Now imagine if the company could get partners who would pay to utilize the other 80% the potential for growth is limitless.

selah, Safaricom had a Profit Before Tax of Kshs. 18.36 Billion. Equity will need at least 2 years to upstage them...

And, if you so much admire the bank, why don't you have it in your portfolio? Just wondering...

Equity Bank became the first Kenyan Bank to announce its 1H 2011 earnings; KCB is expected to report its earnings tomorrow. Equity Bank's 1H 2011 earnings missed my estimate by many miles, i expected 1H growth in PAT to be in 70-84% range as per the CEO's bullish sentiments earlier this year never the less Equity Bank’s growth momentum slowed in the 2Q of 2011, this is mainly due to high inflation which slowed down lending to consumers. Non interest income just like in the 1Q contributed 44% of total operating income. If Equity Bank is able to maintain this performance in the second half full year 2011 PAT will come in at around Sh9.4 Billion versus Sh7.1 Billion for 2010. I expect the 2H to be more challenging than the 1H mainly due to high inflation which is projected to hit 22% by year end, I expect interest rates to go up as CBK battles to contain the run away inflation, the two factors might further slowdown lending in the 2H and thus slow down growth in terms of EPS and PAT, my price target on the stock is now Sh26.

The reason I dont have it in my portfolio is because Its risk exposure compared to my current investments is too high(its target market is too risky in my opinion)

I was observing this segment during the PEV aftermath and although Equity survived its peers in the segment wrote off a lot of bad debts and registered losses that made me wary of any bank that primarily targets this market.

My observation does not mainly look at election violence but also any considerable shock in the SME can really affect the performance of Equity.

Why do some guys here believe Raila would frustrate equity? If l remember correctly, Raila himself was the guest of honour in opening Equity Bank branches in Bondo, Siaya & Homa Bay. He himsefl encouraged locals to get loans from Equity to develop their businesses. Jetlink in which Raila has considerable shares banks with 3 banks, including Equity. Where does this perception that he would frustrate Equity is coming from?

Separately, Equity needs a few years to reach Safaricom. Granted Safaricom has come under pressure due to tariff pricing and market regulation, but at this rate, Equity need 2.5 - 3 years to reach safaricom's profitability.

It will be in the interest of RAO to protect Equity for some reasons you have mentioned above and for political reasons.

However in my opinion it will not be that easy for Equity to march Safcom, the assumption of 2.5 to 3 years means that safcom will stagnate at the same levels or competition will eat into it, well what if one operator closes shop and this could also happen within the same period....

With the independence of SS, growth of the SMEs, growth of the lower middle class, the transition of the EAC into a seamless economic block & EAC COMESA & SADC merging into one economic block by 2015, credit & banking awareness, agency banking.
With the above even with the rise in inflation, 2012 elections & with a conservative yoy growth of 30%, i see EBL becoming the most profitable co. surpassing safcom by 2015 - 2016 as they've already strategically set themselves apart & in the right path & are innovative on mass products.
One should travel to various countrysides to see what EBL has done & i mean from Rumuruti to Siaya, Lamu to Mumias etc & you'll realise what i mean.
Their asset base is also on double digit growth & their efficiency on Assets can be seen on their ROA when compared to that of KCB & their asset base might touch 200b or close by the end of the year.
Any guy who'll scoop the presidency won't mess with this giant unless he's ready for a meltdown.

@ycs, some of us have made good money in safcom more than once. With safcom its all about timing.
