I guess many of you will have noted that 2 days Safaricom made their Bamba na Bob tariff permanent.

This morning I was pleasantly surprised to find that SCOM has significantly reduced Internet Data Rates e.g. Kshs 499 now gets you 500 MB while you can get 8GB for Kshs 3,999. As for those who favour unlimited data usage this is now at Kshs 1,000 for 7 Days and 3,000 for 30 Days.

I have also noted that their daily bumbes of 5MB for 5/=, 10MB for 8/= and 25MB for 20/= virtually have no competition in this band unless you consider the unlimited daily but extremely slow bundles from Orange and Yu. I do not know about Airtel as I have never used their Internet packages.

Anyhow, with the above measures, I bet that SCOM will continue with their stranglehold especially of the Data market.

The question now is what will these do to their revenues and their profits going forward?

Safaricom will maintain their strong hold in the data market. Airtel was going to launch their 3G in March or April this year,now they have said September. If they do it in September i am sure Safaricom will use their trump card of 4G by launching it and then no one will be interested on 3G anymore.

Expect the others to try and reduce theirs. Maybe YU will now give you Internet for free, of course at a crawl.

@MwanaH, your heading is wrong. Safaricom is not fighting back for what? Scom has the crowd with it both in voice and in data. In fact for Data, it is a virtual monopoly.

As for voice - you have seen desperation creep in to the extent of some giving free calls. Now how many guys have told you that they have recently acquired Yu lines?

As for MNP, the less said of that the better.

@Lovely2010, am wondering y wouldn't u opt to buy a 1.5gb bundle for 1k and browse at Ksh 0.67/- per mb... instead of Ksh 1/- under the 500mb bundle ama for u the difference in charges is neither here or there???

@lovely2010, bettertry makes a good case. You can spend the same 1K you used to spend but get 1,500 MB. Your cost per MB will come down to Kshs 0.67 (not 1.5 - @bettertry - try again) rather than 1/= per MB for the 500 bob bundle.

No doubt that's what SCOM is trying to get us to do.

My 650MB expired yesterday and I needed to load a little to reactivate it. I bought ksh 100 expecting some 30MB. I got 50MB and didn't understand what had happened until I read the advert today!! Airtel is dead, given they now have a new Sep date for 3G rollout.

Zuku is no longer 1000/- it is 1,500/-...but you get shared speeds and its shit. Sometimes at night it is very slow.
