I guess many of you will have noted that 2 days Safaricom made their Bamba na Bob tariff permanent.

This morning I was pleasantly surprised to find that SCOM has significantly reduced Internet Data Rates e.g. Kshs 499 now gets you 500 MB while you can get 8GB for Kshs 3,999. As for those who favour unlimited data usage this is now at Kshs 1,000 for 7 Days and 3,000 for 30 Days.

I have also noted that their daily bumbes of 5MB for 5/=, 10MB for 8/= and 25MB for 20/= virtually have no competition in this band unless you consider the unlimited daily but extremely slow bundles from Orange and Yu. I do not know about Airtel as I have never used their Internet packages.

Anyhow, with the above measures, I bet that SCOM will continue with their stranglehold especially of the Data market.

The question now is what will these do to their revenues and their profits going forward?

Paying 50 cts for an MB of data - now that's good. I will definitely be sticking with SCOM - at least until the others can offer 3G speeds at a lower price.

Safaricom will maintain their strong hold in the data market. Airtel was going to launch their 3G in March or April this year, now they have said September. If they do it in September i am sure Safaricom will use their trump card of 4G by launching it and then no one will be interested on 3G anymore.

This is the greatest news for me. I use 600mb per month for safcom that is 1000ksh. If now I buy 2*499=998Ksh. I will get 1000mb instead of 600Mb. I also use Orange 1000mb @ 850. If safcom has added me extra 400 Mb it means I might get rid of my orange modem hence spend 1000ksh instead of 1850...Halellujah! The 850 could go to my charity project I started...Thanks to the better option...

Expect the others to try and reduce theirs. Maybe YU will now give you Internet for free, of course at a crawl.

@MwanaH, your heading is wrong. Safaricom is not fighting back for what? Scom has the crowd with it both in voice and in data. In fact for Data, it is a virtual monopoly.

As for voice - you have seen desperation creep in to the extent of some giving free calls. Now how many guys have told you that they have recently acquired Yu lines?

As for MNP, the less said of that the better.

I had been on orange for quite a while until last month when I dug up my SCOM modem... after several disappointments from Orange. Went ahead and loaded 1.5GB at sh1,999... today they got finished and I was very happy to see that ad. I have just loaded another 1.5GB, this time it only cost me sh999!

Guess what, I'm not going back to Orange any time soon!

And Kencell/Celtel/Zain/Aitel? Well, been there, done that. Too slow and poor customer service.

BTW: I think Orange has the best call centre of all telcos.

@mukiha - What's the use of a great call center without any quality service?

@mukiha - their call centre is best because there is no one to call them. At one even zain had one of the best call centre but as their customer numbers started to increase their call centre service started to become worse.
