For you to be classified as middle class in Kenya you need to spend between $2 and $20 a day (Kshs 180 to 1800. Put simply, once you start shopping in a super market in Kenya... you have ceased living from hand-to-mouth (kadogo econ) and you've entered the realms of Middle class.

45% of Kenyans are considered middle class though quite a number spend between $2 and $4 just hovering above poverty line and will get back there if an disastrous event occur like disease.

Mpango wa Kando is not restricted to middle class... even the poor have...but hesabu is different

Middle class are those who have achieved the 1234 Kenyan Dream:

1 Wife / (Husband?)
2 Children
3 Bedroom House
4 Wheel Drive

Funny enough found that we share some similarities with New Zealand...

I think, a middle class kenyan should be one who earns between 40K - 200K kenyan money net.

Where would you classify Kenyans earning between 250K to 600K?

@Jamani, anyone earning above 200K is upper class, not elite!

The classification is on spending... not earning... but in a rational society the two are correlated.

@GGK, Thats very true. But i fail to understand, how would you classify a samburu or a pastrolist in general who owns 500 heads of goats and 100 cows!

If i may be asked, such a person is a silly elite Kenyan!

I think in terms of wealth such a fella would be (middle class) depending on where his herd is valued at. A beef cow where I come from costs 20k and a goat @4k. The fella is worth 4m. assuming he does not owe any bank ... his net worth is enviable. But the guy does not spend anything so he is below poverty line.

Seriously ... your guy should sell part of his herd, sink a borehole, sell water or irrigate and live well. Why all those animals yet unaomba serikali ukuletee unga?
