Hey all,

I am thinking of digging/doing a dam that can hold about 1 Million litres of water i.e 20M by 10M by 5M. Sometime back, a guy told me that the government had tractors for this purpose that could be hired. Does anyone have information on this? Where else can I get this done?

if you are doing an earth dam the most important equipment is the grader because you will be placing them in layers, the dumpers and rollers. tractors may even never step a foot at the site. where are you getting the water?

Visit the Ministry of Works workshop in industrial area, Machakos road, off Dunga Road..They hire out heavy equipment such as earth movers, tippers, graders etc but I think it depends where your land is. But where is your water source?

@sober,

Can't help but laugh kidogoLaughing out loudly ...How do you get a grader out of a 5m pit?It's impractical....I think what Bwenyenye is looking for is a backhoe or excavator.An excavator would be more ideal given the size of his pit but the price per hour is up there.

Excavator

Backhoe;

@All,

Thanks for the responses. I think haka ka-tractor Njunge ameweka hapa will do. I want to store rainwater in the dam for use during the dry weather. In Maasai land, we call it a 'siranga'. The Maasai use it for storing water to feed their livestock during the dry spell. Sasa mimi nataka kutumia kupanda maharagwe, na mboga
@ Njunge what is the estimated cost per hour and how long would it take to complete?

@bwenyenye,

It would depend on locality.Where i am,a backhoe goes for 8K while the excavator goes for 17K and deservedly so.That thing is a work animal.

@ bwenyenye, get the science of building the pit right. 5m is very deep. We don't want the reservoir walls to collapse during excavation or when filling up, do we?
