Augmentin is the original preparation of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid and neither of the two ingredients contain di-isodecyl phthalate.Augmentin and its generic ie amoklavin, julmentin, clavam, enhancin etc is very safe and very potent in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections including pneumonia.Actually, its one of the best and 1st line for pneumonia related cases.

Zinnat is the original of cefuroxime axetil,a 2nd generation cephalosporin.
Again, this product is very safe and has not been banned anywhere. Its potency in urinary tract infections and to some extent URTI and LRTI makes it a good product to eliminate those bacteria in the rate you have never seen.
Therefore,Zinnat and its generics ie proximexa,Zamur,Cefuzime etc is very safe !!
.

Have a talk with any microbiologist. Unlike some few years ago, augmentin (especially) and cefuroxime are not giving very good results with bacteriology sensitivities. I don't know whether it is a general case of resistance due to abuse but truthfully, I don't think they should be used as first line choice drugs. That's my opinion.

I do not really know where you people are getting information on banned products.

As @Robinhood said, its the Taiwan batch that contained harmful products of di-isodecyl phthalate but not whole range of augmentin.

I hope this puts matter to rest.I would like to reiterate that the two products are very safe and potent/effective in eliminating those bacteria.

@burning, thanks for clearing that up. I understand that these antibiotics have different strengths depending on the severity of the disease. What is the recommended dosage in the initial stages of an infection? The doctors i've seen usually prescribe the 250mg syrup for my 2 year old daughter for 5 days whenever she gets a throat infection yet i know there's the 125mg dose. How strong is too strong?

The dosage depends on body weight and condition being treated rather than the age in children.
The usual dose is 125mg twice daily or 10mg/kg twice daily to a maximum of 250mg daily for children less than 2 years. For those 2 years and above, the dosage increases to 250mg twice daily or 15mg/kg twice daily to a maximum of 500mg daily.
This works well for otitis media, mild to moderate LRTI (Lower respiratory tract infections)and even severe cases of LRTI and if pneumonia is suspected.

Therefore, the prescription to your kid was so much in order and was the correct dosage.

Thanks for clearing that up!

Thanks Dr BS for clearing the air. Its always important to verify info before acting on it.
That said, tho many here demonize Gertrudes, let's also recognize them for the charity work they do. And for what they do well. One reading comments here would think children die daily there...surely thats not the case-and fyi, i neither work there nor do i benefit in any way from them.
Then People-learn to ask the doctor questions! Tell him everything about that child. Ask why you're being given a 2nd antibiotic, ask why the child is not improving. If you're not happy, go back before the review date! Its about your baby after all isn't it?
I've always had one Paed for my children. If we're away, i will call and consult also and if need be i get a 2nd opinion

Ms Mkenyan, one of my nasty experiences at Gertrude's was with a doc who was so impatient that when I tried to give an history of the kid's illness, he said 'just tell me what is wrong with the kid NOW, I don't want to hear those other stories'

Getrude's is a NO NO NO !

They have what i would call quacks.

I nearly lost my kid after they diagnosed tonsils which was later correctly diagnosed as phneumonia.

I mercifully got a good peaditrician and nowadays, i dont even think of that place anymore.

They should convert it from a childrens hospital to a play school.

Demand to see another doctor!!! Eish!! I personally tolerate those ones. When i go in... I walk out only after i have finished or feel i have finished..
ABK huyo daktari.
By the way that is not uncommon in our hospitals.. sio GGCH peke yake. I once went to Nbi Hosp, so i was trying to tell the Doc what was wrong so he goes on to say he doesn't need the history. I told him its important, he said no, i walked out and asked for the nurse in charge whom i asked to get me a doctor who has time to listen to me-Needless to say he was quite embarrassed but i was in pain and needed someone who can listen to me as it really was related to the history!
So please, do not be intimidated, you have paid for the service. Get value for money!!

I really feel for parents who , when their children are unwell, are mistreated. Being a doctor, is not just about papers, character is also important.

Has anyone had of Dr.Ndung'u Muturi ? He is located at Aga Khan Doctor's Plaza, 2nd Floor, Room 227. In my opinion and from experience, this is one of the best paedtrician doctors. And he is very humble. I never saw any other doctor when I was a kid. He is very good, very good!

Consultation Fee ranges from Kshs. 2,500 to Kshs. 3,000. Not very sure.
But its totally worth it.

I take my kids to Dr. Kaburu, at Nairobi west next to Moi Educational complex. I rate him one of the best.

I trust in the ability of patient history in the diagnosis of current ailments. Having a personal doctor helps you not to always repeat history. As for me, I had a pediatrician by the name Dr. Wanyoike CMO his clinic is called Avenue Medical Clinic Lyric House
consultation about 2000

Up to date when I have a asthmatic attack I go to him

Interesting
Just today a close friend of mine was complaining about getrude embakassi where he went at 10.30am with a sick child. He was not attended to till 3pm and was another hour and a half before he got his medicine.

He said never again will he go there. Personally I stopped taking my girls there early last year. I can get the same poor service for free.

@RobinHood where exactly is this Dr. Kaburu?

Dr. Opondo corner house seems to know what he is doing. Take kids there. I know this is unfair to the newbie docs but if you are under the age of 45, no you will not see my child. Bad experience with young paeds when the baby was in the 1st year.

I think in every estate there is one as long as there is a catholic church. I have seen one in Umoja and komarocks.

For some reason, whenever i've taken baby girl to a mission hospital/ dispensary she never gets fully cured and i have to take her to a paed at knh doctors plaza. I don't know whether it's the drugs they dispense which happen to be very cheap by the way or something else. Nowadays i just go straight to knh
