NEWCOMER.....If u do what AMATHENGE is telling u,its good for your business.But KRA will come calling and they will use your own sword (documents) to crucify you.Prepare two sets of books .....one for you and one for KRA,then keep your mouth shut.Why pay tax while Kibaki and his corrupt goons are not paying? Don't pay,keep money in your pocket.

Putting your plan on paper? How dissappointing! Would have thought you are going to key in your plan into your computer - after all,you will be selling computers. So what better way to market than using one all the time?

@newcomer,

You wrote ' I am a high school teacher and I intend to register a company to perfom two tasks; sale of computers especially for education and educational consultancy services.I have two requests; one,where can I get good computer hardware deals especially for used laptops. I have some little experience since I have already started small time,but the fellows I buy computers from usually have very low stocks. Two,on the consultancy,what licences shall I require and how shall I get them?'

@Ali Baba;

It is shocking that you can publicly advise some one not to pay taxes.

True,MPs are not paying their fair share and some ministers are busy stealing the little that the rest of us pay; however,that should never be a reason for anyone to refuse to pay their share.

Remember,TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT

@Newcomer; if you want to have a stress-free business that you will be proud of all your life,keep ONE set of accounts. Record all your sales and expenses...don't inflate expenses...and every three months walk to KRA and pay the necessary taxes.

BTW; since you are going to be a private trader,you will qualify for TURNOVER TAX,but check your margins carefully before signing up...you might end up paying higher than normal income tax.

If in doubt about taxes,visit your nearest KRA office and attend their public (FREE) seminars.

@Mukiha,

What if what newcomer makes is just enough to survive on? i.e buy food,pay rent and utilitiesSo does he pay his taxes or starve?

@Chaka;

Taxes are not based on people's expenses; they are based on INCOME.

So,when you say 'just enough to survive i.e buy food,pay rent and utilities' you are looking at the wrong side of the equation!!

The question is not his expenses,but his income.

And if he makes a profit of less than Sh11,620,he will be effectively exempt from paying income tax....because of the automatic 'Personal Relief' given to all individual tax payers

In any case; if you are employed,PAYEE is deducted before the money goes to your account....and you have to survive on the after tax payment.

There is no excuse for evading tax!!!

Mr. Newcomer,avoid people like these. They are the vexations you shall encounter while conducting your business.

Have you made any 'sells' yet?

@aemathenge,thanks,I also smelt a rat here. I have received many emails of this type promising me a share of stolen money from banks and inheritance from rich parents. The said benefactors only want my bank account details and will wire the cash. I here that if I make a mistake of giving the details,the con men have the ability to dig into my bank account or credit cards. Could I be encountering one right here at SK.

I already have two orders that I should deliver by Tuesday next week if I can secure the correct machines.

I am quite ignorant on the corporate tax policies and I am following the discussion with a lot of interest. I have a lot of fear for KRA though, I doubt whether I can dare joke with them,but I would really love to learn as much as possible strategies for avoiding and reducing tax payable.

@Ali Baba;

Taxes are for everyone who EARNS some money.

The fact that MPs don't pay their full share [they pay a small portion] is no excuse for anyone to refuse to pay theirs.

@newcomer;

Do not fear KRA. They are actually very friendly if you are willing to pay yous share of taxes.....those who want to avoid paying are the ones live in fear.

As I wrote earlier,if you want to live in peace,start paying your share immediately. If you are not sure how much to pay,just walk over to your local KRA office and ask for assistance.

Don't listen to Ali Baba {& the40 thieves???}....

@newcomer - if you can get hold of today's (2 Oct) Business Daily - there is a pull out in The Edge - see page 16...and of course,the whole pull out...a good primer on the topical issues in ICT

The problem with equality is that we desire that it be with those that have more than us rather that those that have less

@ newcomer you may also seek company of an accountant - tax expert. A good one will show you how to reduce tax to the lowest level posible. Avoid those ones adviving you to overpay yourself. In business you are allowed to make tax deductions after meeting expenses,and what if these expenses go to increase your income in future,along those lines.

Everyone expects the government to provide services and actually makes noise when these services are poor or not forthcoming but no one wants to pay taxes. Be realistic. Pay your taxes then take the government to task for poor services. Tax dodgers have no reason to complain if the government provides poor or no services. That includes those morons in Bunge who think we owe them a living.
