Dr. Charles Kabetu the acting CEO has been acting like a child with a sore thumb, ever since the KNH board of management decided to hire a non medical CEO.the decision was informed by the fact that the former CEO's have been linient on their errant collegues.
The BOM is also concerned that the hospital has many consultant Doctors who have very little to show of.
Furthermore, the former CEOs lacked formal managerial skills, which are at par with modern cooporate world.
It remains to be seen how Mr. Richard with no medical background, and no institutional memory will cope with the various cabals that exist in the hospital.
On the other hand, the enactment of the new constitution will force the institution to operate in new ways. Tough reforms are roumered to be on the way comming, and consultant Doctors will be the first casualties.
A medical CEO would flinch at the thought of inflicting such pain to his comrades, and no Doctor worth his salt would want to be associated with this process.
A non medical CEO becomes the preffered sweeping broom. He will not be victimised by Doctors and at the end of his tenure, he will move to another organisation, free from interference of the Ghosts from the past.
Mr. Jotham Micheni, the former CEO has quitely joined the staff of Mt.kenya university.........Mr. Onguti, tyhe front runner of reforms in KNH is now a senior official in the MOH. Proffesor Meme, the first indeginous CEO of KNH was appointed ps of health......he has managed to win his battles against corruption charges, and is occasionally seen sneaking around KNH, incognito......
Only two former CEO's rejoined KNH staff establishment after the expiry of the ir contracts: DR. Hosea waweru and Dr. Mwita. The two were non willing CEO's who were planted in these position, thanks to the influece of proff Meme. They were purpets in the hands of the proffesor.
Dr. Florence Musau was suspended from the post after the press busted her with ..............charity Ngilu.

last week, thenew KNH boss failed to show up for the hospital introduction tour, that was to be conducted by the board of management. Members of the board, and varoius departmental heads waited well past 7 pm, for a boss who turned out to be a no show.
Dr. Kabetu is now keeping a low profile, now that the owner of the hoet saet is known. Given that the incoming CEO has no medical background, speculation is rife that Dr. Kabetu will continue calling the shots behind the scenes as the new CEO learns the strings.
This is the second time KNH is being headed by a non medic, a break from long established tradition and thee law. The medical and dental practitioners act states that 'other paramedical and non medical staff shall practice under the supervision of the medical practitioner'. This clause has , traditionally been interpreted to bestow administrative powers to the Doctors. This is why all government hospital are headed by a doctor, answearing to the title of 'MEDICAL SUPERITENDANT' in theabsence of a doctor, the duties of the 'med sup' are executed by the senior most clinical officer, or the senior most nursing officer in the station. However these duties are limited to provision of health services. The other administrative duties are executed bythe HOSPITAL SECRETARY, whosupervises the non medical staff, eg watchmen, cooks, drivers etc.
This administrative arrangement is porous as a sieve, with unscrupulous individuals exploiting the many loop holes. It is no wonder that public hospitals have turned out to be inefficient.
Consider a scenario where a newly qualified medical officer is posted to a remote health facility. He / she becomes the defacto leader of the facility by virtue of the office. Now add the fact that this new graduate has been living under the guidance of the parents and the college administration all his life, and that the only problem solving technique he has ever practiced is to stone innocent motorists on uhuru/ university way; then add the fact that the people he is supposed to supervise are the agemates of his parents, and have stayed in the station since he was in class 5, having biult extensive networks with the community.........there you are......an incompetent weak leader.
It was against this background that the KNH board made their informed choice of hiring a trained administrator.
