There are regulations coming in force in te next 12 months. Minimum monthly Salo of Kshs 7,586/= plus two days off every week and I quote "....The legal notice number 64 of June 10 sets Sh7,586 as the minimum wage an employer can pay a resident domestic servant in Nairobi besides the mandatory weekly 48 hour break.
Failure to grant the break leaves the employer with the punitive option of paying the househelp at the rate of Sh365 per day or an additional Sh3,000 a month.

Guys, it appears unrealistic but until your housegal leaves then goes reporting you to the House Help soemthing something organisation, ..... you will see fire. Have a friend who went through that. Wasnt interesting .... The laudable is more often than not rendered laughable by overclaim

I don't think this is a good move and the house helps are the ones to suffer because you'll only need then on a full time basis when you have a new born after that you'll only need a mama for washing the house and clothes once a week for 400/-. Everyone will have a part-time housi who has to go get her own food and accommodation. BBI will solve it :)

It may not be practical for most part. It will boil down to your agreement with the individual pay them the stipulated minimum and ask them to find own accomodation or stay with the employer but at a lesser pay. In a nutshell employers will need to consider the cost of housing and feeding them as part of the pay!!! You will know that you have arrived when money and time are not mutually exclusive "events" in you life!

if you were to factor in the cost of the food they consume, the accommodation they enjoy and other fringe benefits, the actual cost of having a 'house assistant' is way above the stated figure. It is a curious fact that of all the illusions that beset mankind, none is quite as curious as that tendency to suppose that we are mentally and morally superior to those who differ from us in opinion.

I think its workable, all you need it just to prepare a monthly slip for your help.
Gross Salary - 7,586/=
Deductions: Accommodation - 2,000/- Food - 2,500/- NSSF - 200/- NHIF - 160/-
Net Pay -2,726/-
I assume the deductions will be going to you since you are the provider.

KShs 7,586 is just too low, KShs 15,000 would have made more sense Don’t cry over spilled milk…it could have been beer!

I think it is reasonable but a Contract must be signed as Terms of Ref, stating the scope of work.Bila ToR other Employers will be guests of the courts! I am working on mine now now before I seek a lawyer's view.Getting from shagz itawezekana must be trained and understands His/Her working environment.

I agree with you, if you pay the said amount and ask the househelp to rent a room and buy food for hersel, she/he will not even save anything. They cannot afford the luxury of your house if they were to pay for it themselves.

And it will be inconveniencing for the employer - waking up first thing in the morning to open the gate and/or door so your housegal who has her own accommodation can come in; and waiting to lock after she leaves! It may be simpler to just marry a second wife, to be housewife :) Ladies dont attack me l am kidding The laudable is more often than not rendered laughable by overclaim

Just watched Citizen news: If you dont house them, you add 15% as house allowance. PLUS Atwoli says that pursuant to the new rules, COTU will conduct impromptu visits to ensure compliance. Itching to sue on the basis of my right to privacy. I want less government in my house unless I've given them reasonable grounds to visit me.

Its their right let them earn like the rest.
But the day care centers and mama osha will flourish.
The day care center near my place charges only k.sh100 per day and mama osha will charge K.sh400-500 to do the whole weeks laundry and clean the whole house which she does every saturday. We can do the dishes ourselves (Sufuria nunua stainless steel-very easy to wash).
Its a free market so go for the service provider you can afford.
Its even better because day cares graduate to become schools. That is how chaliwong university was founded.

@ T.D I love the maths there...@ FINDEL, I work at a bank and my basic salary is exactly 15,000, so are u suggesting that the first thing I should do once I receive my salary is head to the nearest ATM and hand it all over to my househelp whom i house and feed?????? About the 48 hours bullshit are they aware that some people work on saturdays??
