.....move away from KCB and stop the complaints. Banks are so many.... Ths cost of Standing order to "other banks" should not exceed Kshs 250/= in any bank worth its salt. There was a time I complained when KCB charged me Kshs 50/= because I had deposited (not encashed)a cheque whose only mistake was that it was a dividend cheque . They said its a policy that any cheque that pays a dividend and deposited with them has to be charged 50/=. I wondered what was so special in dividend cheques that are not in all other cheques.

I'm with NIC and as much as it has its issues, I can say I'm getting value. I have a MOVE account and have like 6 standing orders there! I also have my unlimited ATM withdrawals, online banking, mobile banking etc. All in my package of 800 a month. I dont know about paying for statements.

However, they do charge 500 bob for RTGS. Otherwise hakuna shida yoyote. If I paid 500 bob for a standing order I would smash something.

I once had a heated discussion with some bank managers about the penalty for a bounced cheque. My point was; Why was the bank established in the first? Answer: to provide banking services.

If that is the case, then what service has it provided a customer when it levies a charge for a bounced cheque?

After 30minutes of argument, I managed to convince them that the bank has no right to penalise any wrong-doing; that is the duty of the courts of law!

The bank has no right to punish anyone for immoral behaviour; that is the duty of parents!

Therefore; the bank MUST provide a service in return for the penalty charge. For example, call the customer to advise on the status of the cheque... and perhaps ask the customer to go to the bank and correct the problem immediately [same day].

Some of the managers argued that such action would be too expensive. My response was: then charge more, charge Sh10,000 instead of Sh3,000 for a bounced cheque - but make sure you give a service in return!

I am yet to find out if they implemented my suggestion.

From a bank's point of you, this would be quite cumbersome, and you have to employ a whole dept to call all the a/c holders of bounced chqs. The charge is like a self regulating pain not to issue a chq when there are no funds...well not all customers do this intentionally, but they probably forget.

Where I am, one cannot even think of bouncing a cheque, coz that means swiftly going to jail, but equally the penalties for bouncing are not exorbitantly high at the banks.

I am with stanchart and once had a very bad experience, last year. I had 270k in the account. I issued 3 cheques: one for 110k, another for 158k and another for 2k. Apparently the bank only deducted their monthly charges after l issued the cheques but before the cheques were deposited, so that my account had 269k. Would you believe it, they bounced all my three cheques and charged me penalties for 3 bounced cheques! Wouldnt they have honoured two (for the larger amounts) and just bounced the 2k one? When l complained, they said they had no policy on which cheque to honour and which one not to. I was very very disappointed.

@tonicasert: did you say cumbersome? That is a lame excuse by the banks! After all, this is exactly what my bank does---right here in Kenya. They will never bounce your cheque until they call your and give you time to top-up your account. One time they actually paid my cheque even though the account was 5k short (a result of an over-sight on my part). they called me the following day (after payment) to request that I top-up in order to avoid the penalty.

If one bank can do it; I don't see the reason why others can't. No matter how many customers they have...they just need to increase the service personnel proportionately.

And why do the likes of KCB and Barclays charge 600/= for a Bankers cheque ? The money is your anyway. All they provide is the cheque leaf and a signature.
I thought they'd shape up after equity's and Family 100 but wapi ? Still waiting.

@Mukiha, its healthy to hear the complaints... they make us all wiser before we move from the pan to tha fire! @barry, its interesting that the same stanchart will call u even when they are paying out a cheque u have issued just to confirm... in another instance i was so a cheque found inadequate funds but they still paid the supplier instead on hitting me with a bounced cheque... i guess the experiences are all different. that's why um stuck with them inspite of lack of BRANCHES COMPARED to KCB/BBK
