Essar telecom is putting its kenyan and in general african operation up for sale.

This seems to show Essar is divesting from telecom sector after selling its controversial Indian outfit to its partner Vodafone.

Not entirely surprising; business has been tough for them. And there are no signs its going to get easier, especially considering they have no plans of going into 3G - which incidentally also requires tonnes of money. Guess who will be next for sale.

Most probably safcom might buy coz of the Vodafone factor though the Monopolies commission will raise alot of questions coz of the 'noise' that might occur thereafter.

Why would Safcom buy them out? Think about it, where would the current subscribers go if it folded? If you use the current market share as the basis of churn, then Safcom will get 75% without buying out anything. It is therefore in their interest that Yu just folds.
On a different front, will Essar also dump the white elephant KPRL?

That would be beautiful...if I were Safcon i'd buy Yu & kill it slowly whilst moving customers to Safcon.

MTN have always wanted to get into Kenya, this is their chance.

$300m is not cheap, but it will give them a youthful market, about 1m subs..

MTN can put their bid but this will not be easy.

The locking of subscribers by safaricom will drive even Airtel out of business.
Orange has realised this and has opted to partner with safcon on some deliveries.
