Why shoot yourself in the foot? Really, really Mumias, sugar with vitamin A, really?? Sugar is sugar is sugar! Sugar and health is like water and oil! they just don't go. If I was Mumias sugar, I'd stick to selling sugar as a sweetener and not a health food. That's a big miss for Mumias and they should withdraw it. Speak of lack of innovation.... BBI will solve it :)

@ 2012. you have along way to go. maybe it because we all cannot be health experts can we.anyway the raw sugar that we take is devoid of all vitamins.do you know what that means ???it means upon intake the vitamins that are supposed to break it down come from the body and thus get depleted as they have to be used to process the raw sugar. If sugar consumption is continued, an over-acid condition results, and more minerals are needed from deep in the body to correct the imbalance. If the body is lacking the nutrients used to metabolize sugar, it will not be able to properly handle and rid itself of the poisonous residues. These wastes accumulate through the brain and nervous system, which speeds up cellular death. The bloodstream becomes over-loaded with waste products and symptoms of carbonic poisoning result.
in conclusion by adding these vitamins the body is able to store its own vitamins and uses the vitamins in the sugar to process the sugar.
ITS A WIN SITUATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not a bad move at all actually it will make their sugar more competitive its a collaboration with a UN body so its not like Mumias woke up one morning and decided to fortify their sugar. Sugar is essential for a healthy being so I don't see why fortifying the sugar with vitamins contradict or makes them shoot their own leg. @QW, If this is the case then MSC should have put a warning on the sugar packet and recommend that once their sugar is consumed, one should take a vitamin A pill... I also think these guys lack imagination...if they can come up with sugar that does not cause cavities, that would be nice or may be they should start making bottled sugar cane juice.I read somewhere that it is actually a healthy drink as it contains many minerals...

ITS A WIN SITUATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boss you have lost me. How is Vitamin used in synthesis of sugar? I thought that only enzymes (proteins) are required. Itari muting'oe ihuragwo ngi ni Ngai

ITS A WIN SITUATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boss you have lost me. How is Vitamin used in synthesis of sugar? I thought that only enzymes (proteins) are required. FUN FACTSVitamin A is useful to the body and good for us. VitA in my sugar is a positive thing... eg. i can cut down on carrots... Vitamin A is not used in the breakdown of sugar. Sugar is good. It (sucrose in this case) is one of the most easily digested food... hence what we call "instant energy". In a normal human body, sugar is bad only if it is taken in excess quantities ie. that cannot be expended as energy... then, it is stored as more complex carbohydrate in liver as an energy reserve... when liver reserves are adequate the body changes tact and stores as fat! The body is a genius and will fill every nook and cranny with any excess carbohydrates... (abdomen, hips, breasts, upper arms, thighs, around vital organs (heart/liver/digest system etc.) and INSIDE arteries / veins ! Heck even the fat face. All this trouble is for a "rainy day" when food is scarce. Absolutely no carbohydrates get OUT of the body... so if I take 20Tuskers in one night I only let go of the precious water in the beer which ironically is the healthy part of the beer Sugar does not leave "poisonous residues" in the body... respiration of sugar uses oxygen and produces water and carbodioxide (green house gas: bad for the ozone but not bad for my body). Incase i take "dirty" sugar that may contain poisonous / toxic substances... it's most probable that VitaminA may NOT be the one that will deal with these... As Selah has rightly put it,this is a project in collabo with a UN agency in an effort to get vital vitamins to the populace and what better way than to have them in sugar which is actually consumed by just about everybody.....ama waweke kwa Tusker?...Anyway,the target is mainly children and again, they will be fortifying about a tenth of their sugar and therefore consumers still have a choice. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Hebu convince your girlfriend to go on a healthy vitamin A sugar diet uone. If you want Vitamin A then take liver, carrot, egg, apricot, papaya, mango, peas, milk, broccoli, sweet potato, butter, kale, spinach, pumpkin, collard greens, cheddar cheese, melon etc. Don't tell me about sugar. BBI will solve it :)

@2012 Too much of anything is dangerous you are not being asked to consume more of mumias sugar just your normal dosage and this time round it has vitamins to hell you see better. I dont know whats wrong with making a product more healthier than what were are used to. Mind you if you abstained from taking sugar a doctor might advice you to take it ...its unhealthy. Quoting a publication from african journal of food, agriculture and nutritional development by tom hongo:
Micronutrient malnutrition, particularly vitamin A deficiency (VAD), iron deficiency anaemia, and iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are major public health concerns The prevalence of Vitamin A Deficiency are 61.2% among children and 29.6% among mothers Micronutrient deficiency has severe consequences namely stunted growth, blindness, reduce the human capacity to work, cause high maternal mortality, miscarriages and still-births in deficient mothers, just to name a few. One Strategy to combat micronutrient deficiency in Kenya is: Fortification
Today, fortification is increasingly recognized as a medium- to long-term strategy for improving micronutrient status in large populations in the third world countries . Despite its importance, it is a very costly venture thus the Kenyan government should give sufficient incentives to the industries that engage in food fortification programmes to stimulate active and sustained fortification.
Fortification is favored because it does not require dietary habit changes, can be implemented relatively quickly and is sustainable if managed well. Since in Kenya, most people use salt, sugar and flour, they will serve as perfect food vehicles to reach the vulnerable population.

ITS A WIN SITUATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ala! Gotta research this some more. I do know that vitamins aid in the digestion of sugar somewhat. When you drink you lose Vitamin B nad taking sugar (eg soda) when drinking will give you a worse hangover because you lose Vitamins from both the drinking and the sugar ingestion. What you say could be true but I do not know much about the role of Vitamin A. If you're right, my new sugar in the house is sugar with VITAMIN A, thats for sure.

Mumias is on the right path. Salt (for public consumption) sold in #Kenya has iodine & Vit A is a common addition to sugar in many countries as a means to deliver a vital vitamin to the larger population. There are very high chances I would buy Vit A sugar for a few more shillings then 'kawaida' sugar. Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

2. This one died laughing: (ok a bit dramatic but its possible to choke off your air supply) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_from_laughter
3. There is such a thing as “too much” vegetables if you’re ignoring the essential nutrients from other food groups. 4. And they say too much fish is unhealthy: Exposure to mercury poisoning: http://www.huffingtonpos...10/piven-too-much-fish/ and also http://www.eurocbc.org/page438.html Also increases the risk of postrate cancer: http://extremelongevity....e-prostate-cancer-risk/

I have heard of people having low blood sugar I cant remember the term for the disease and the only way you can help such a person is by giving him sugary food. Anyway as @VVS said if you were given sugar which is not fortified with vitamins and Mumias fortified with vit.A Which would you rather buy?
