Uchumi may look like a bad buy, but I am optimistic that it could shock alot of us.

I find that un-neccessary. I think Uchumi will do just fine on its own as it will be on the offensive henceforth.

No value addition to Nakumatt. Wherever Uchumi is, Nakumatt is there in a bigger way so there is nothing Uchumi will bring to the table. It would be of more value to a smaller chain like Naivas who I suspect don't have the financial muscle.
At this point in time South African chains have not mastered Kenyan peculiar habits that saw to it that whoever came from there flopped big time.
American and British chains will have unsustainable overheads so they don't seem to be an option.

On the contrary, in as much as Nakumatt will have a bigger store wherever Uchuni is, it does not have the Uchumi loyalty customers. That is what Uchumi will bring to the table. Nakumatt would gain much more if they took over. However, they should not be allowed to under the Monopolies and STh*** ( I forget) law.

Uchumi customer loyalty? Can you quantify that? I think nakumatt has much much more loyalty making what they'll get from uchumi not very significant. On a light note, the uchumi sandwiches at ngong rd.... Omg! Those things will see uchumi through!

Truth be told those sandwiches are a major ripoff, but a good earner. A sandwich for ksh 140, for the same amount I can buy the same ingredients at the same place and make two.
BTW Walmart have just concluded purchase of a chain in South Africa and plan to use the acquisition to move to fourteen Afican countries.

Uchumi has the people's goodwill, that's as far as wishing goes. Went to a branch where they've labelled a utility table 1200, while at a nearby Naivas was 800 bob. wondered whether Uchumi is really determined in competition..

Uchumi should refresh itself completely, including its name and logo, that way I (and some of us) can think about it differently. Otherwise il'd rather even gamble with Naivas or Tuskys :)
