In a page 4 Daily Nation article titled - Kenya lauded for beating ‘four crises’ by Kevin Kelly, Kenya is praised by the United Nations for recording significant growth during the 2008 and 2009 financial years.
Kenya is lauded for overcoming post election violence, drought, energy shortages and rising food prices as the ‘four crises’ plaguing the country since the 2007 general elections that saw the country plummet into anarchy, disorder and war.
According to the United Nations Economic Report on Africa published on Wednesday the 18th of May, Kenya is said to have restored ‘broad-based, robust growth’.
The report considered Agriculture as the dominating sector in the economy but actual growth was driven by ICT.
The report also commended the government for playing an important role in leading the growth results.
In its study, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union singled out the government’s robust strategy for reviving the economy as the reason for this growth.
It compared Kenya’s growth to the growth of Asian and Latin American countries which achieved growth by adopting deliberate state intervention strategies.
Strategies planned and implemented by government through its fiscal and monetary agents that intervened directly in economic and social aspects of the country have been identified as the causes for this growth.
The report claims that Kenya is on the right path in regard to achieving Vision 2030.
Page 32 of the report clearly outlines the findings of the commission concerning Kenya’s growth.
Kenya is also extensively mentioned throughout the report for its efforts of restoring the Mau complex, investing heavily in infrastructural development, co-operating with CDM projects for transfer of clean technology, financing renewable energy programmes and adopting the implementation of feed-in tariffs in renewable energy production. These are mentioned in pages 33, 65, 66 and 68 of the report.

All that despite the fact that so much more is stolen by our 'leaders'. What if we were to close those gaps? A great country this could be.

Once our infrastructure is in check, Kenya will be far much better. I see another States in Africa...Kenya....right now we are better off than our brothers who run to the US for 'greener pastures' things are worse there.

Great news amid all the hulaballoo! I wish we treasured such news enough to give it Headline Status and not among the news roundup. Thanks for posting this. I had not seen it in today's paper.

This is good news since PEV really destroyed our economy for some time. At least the government is soing something commendable especially now that it has come from the UN.

Sometimes I think foreigners are more interested in seeing us develop than our own media. Instead of publishing such articles our media is more interested in destruction and death. Even when published such a story gets page 4 instead of headlines.

The UN report has changed my view of this country. I thought it was all bad news day in day out. At least there is something positive.

Dont trust the UN. It is an international public institution with the same weaknesses GOK has. Vented interests, politics...... etc.
Lord, thank you!

What I meant is that it is nice to hear it from a source that is not from inside our borders since it would be independent and not biased or bent on achieving some unknown political agenda.

Remember also that the Hague is answerable to the UN meaning you cannot want to lock up the country on one side and then go around praising it on the other side if you had some political motive.

And finally trust me on this, citizens of countries like the US would go ballistic if their government allowed the UN to misuse their money.

That's because we newbies are interested in development and progress and not politics and propaganda.

What a coincidence. I'm one of the newbies and think that the report really focuses on what is right with our country and not what is bad.
After being a haven of peace for so long our country delved into a state of anarchy and war in the same manner as our Arab counterparts in Afghanistan and Somalia (if they can be called Arabs) and this really hurt our economy.
We fought so hard to get Moi out and ironically he had held this country together for so many years that we forgot that peace was far greater than reform. For what is the use of peace amidst a sea of falling bombs? We got Moi out and brought in division, hatred and machetes.
Without political bickering and PEV we could have had real growth. At least even after PEV we recorded a little growth. The fight for democracy has left us being overzealous over the wrong causes and left the things that really matter in the outer realms of our minds.

@Superasha, I concur. There is so much untapped potential in Kenya. Even the corruption and mismanagement of the Moi years did not kill the vibrancy of the country. If we sort out our governance/politics, we could easily get very far.
