nitrogen is good especially if you are running low profile tires on kenyan roads. it really protects from wear and tear that comes as a result of running on underinflated tires and also heat. there's a firm industrial area that does nitrogen for ksh 200 per tire. if you are riding on low profiles its worth every penny coz you know the kind of problems you experience with those kind of tires.

@wachiras;

All tyres deteriorate very fast if used on lower pressure than that recommended by manufacturer.

Low profiles used on proper pressure wear out in about a quarter the time it takes standard profiles.

Now,@200-bob per tyre,how frequently do you re-fill? How will that compare with filling with free airon a weekly basis?

I still think this is another mouse-milk!!

The irony of the matter is,a dude/dudette bought the low profile tires because he/she wanted to save a few coins,then you tell the same dude/tte to go pay for the air that he can get for free,any time he needs to? Not sure if that will work. life is interesting... you will find that those who need some of these things most are the ones who will need to avoid them at any cost...... Now,those with high profile tires and who will afford to buy it,may not find it the very immediate need for the car given that they already have good tires and can also use free air.

IMO,and not to belittle this venture,nitrogen will work in kenya for 'class' kind of thing(initially) but not really for the real need to do it unless,as @mukiha put it,the gas stations stop providing the free 'air'. So for now,may be the marketing should be channelled to targed this group of consumers until the motorists feel the real need to pay for this product.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

@ wendz. low profile tires are more expensive than your regular tires. they are meant to be used with big rims to pimp your ride. but on the other hand,they are more prone to punctures especially if you drive on very rough roads or over potholes due to the small distance between the road surface and the rim. you may even end up breaking the rim itself. @mukiha. nitrogen solves these problems and you only need to do it once every 3 months or so. plus you could still use regular air to top-up as and when need arises.

...but,come to think of it,a few years ago you could walk into any restaurant/hotel and ask for water...they'd give you as much as you want for free...

Today,you ask for water,the waiter will ask you which brand...and charge you at least 50-bob!!!

So,I guess it's only a mater of time before we start paying for AIR,isn't it?

@all,

Nice discussion for what may look like a novel idea ... even here in the West there are many skeptics,I was one until the cash for crankers ( Obama program where one had to give up a gas hog for an economy car) program & a generous incentive from my firm to buy a hybrid,the dealer I bought the hybrid (2010 Prius) from ships all new cars standard with nitrogen filled tyres ... but they forgot to prep mine with nitrogen,before I was getting 48 miles per gallon,now I’m averaging 52 and the ride is smoother,stable and three months later,the tyres had exactly the same pressure ... I was quite impressed and wanted to sound off this idea kwa jamaa ... the ability to adopt is a virtue .... ;)

I now have to move a long … thanks all,now I know I can fill my tyres with nitrogen at Industrial Area... I know Ill be better off than with 'free air' ...

@mukiha I'll sort out the conductivity / density issue with respect to nitrogen as time allows,thanks for pointing that out... the error is mine and should not invalidate efficacy of filling tyres with nitrogen

BTW if you see GREEN valve stem caps on tyres or even a green STEM it means the tyres are inflated with nitrogen

This is good information and by the way the nitrogen thing has been around coz in 2006 i went for rim straightening at ..??not sure whether they are called mitchellin kingsway - near Jeevanjey and they were giving out brouchures to that effect but the cost was about KES 1200 for 4 tyres.

They also claimed aircraft tyres are only filled with nitrogen etc - Change management is not easy,but in most cases change is the only constant.

Small digression....

The 52M/Gal from a nitrogen filled Prius is equivalent to 22km/L. Now what sort of consumption are people getting from 1500cc VVTI Toyotas....running on air?

Mukiha,roughly they give 14-17km/l on highway and 10-12km/l town running!!!!

The chief value of money lies in the fact that one lives in a world in which it is overestimated.
