Good to see this debate back after 1 year.

What constitutes worldly music? I believe this is a highly subjective matter and will have as many answers as our cultural backgrounds.

I was brought up in a mainstream protestant church. They had programs for the youth and kids. They would teach us songs which copied old African songs and even their dancing styles. Yet no one said it was worldly!

In the past, we have seen country music become accepted as holy while its origins are not in church while Rock music whose origins is in church is still demonised.

John Gatu, a former PCEA moderator syas they were accused of being unspiritual and worldly simply because they introduced the guitar and drums in the church!Today no one is opposed to such instruments. Today I see women in trousers, it was an abomination sometime back.

The whole debate is cultural. Not spiritual.Let us not misrepresent God with our misconceptions. If we have to correct a brother, let's use the Bible not traditions and tring to change the word to suit our traditions.(read Mark 7 above

i dnt hget what we are arguing about here. These guys ( crossover1010) are just using what young guyz relate to to pass the massage of the lord to them.Young guyz want things that are hip and trendy and thus if you want to reach them you have to be in the came footing with them.
You donot expect organizers to put up a concert full of old men singing songs of days gone by and they want to target the young generation.it wount work...
so before you start hating on CrossOver 101 think twice...

Lolest,

How long will we go on kulegeza kamba bit by bit? That we are doing it because everybody else is doing it. We will soon capitulate!

Music you are talking about is just a part of the elephant. QW25071985 has fingered it. But for him I think he is saying can be summarized in 4 words; 'the new age movement'
Quote:
that aims to create "a spirituality without borders or confining dogmas" that is inclusive and pluralistic
(if Wikipedia is to be believed.)

Because its the rationale behind this new approach that is the question here.

Its good you have said bible and bible only. That is the way to go. Not personal opinions.

To breeze over music, let me refer you to one of the reformers John Calvin, on which Presbyterians are originated, on what he had to say about church music with reference to Psalm 33, the favorite excuse of the new agers.

John Calvin on Church Music.

Notice where he says:
Quote:
What shall we then say of chanting, which fills the ears with nothing but an empty sound?

Does any one object that music is very useful for awakening the minds of men and moving their hearts? I own it; but we should always take care that no corruption creep in, which might both defile the pure worship of God, and involve men in superstition.

Moreover, since the Holy Spirit expressly warns us of this danger by the mouth of Paul, to proceed beyond what we are there warranted by him is not only, I must say, unadvised zeal, but wicked and perverse obstinacy.” (Calvin on Psalm 33).

Paul advises,

"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms." (James. 5:13)

Then there are numerous passages in the bible that exhort us to sing, yaani open your mouth and sing the words. You have been told to sing the psalms if you are cheerful. What more do you want?

Also notice where Calvin says:
Quote:
Men who are fond of outward pomp may delight in that noise; but the simplicity which God recommends to us by the apostle is far more pleasing to him.

I am yet to read where the bible instructs me to dance, jump about in style, gyrate to beats, sweat it out, etc. But you can show me and I will believe.

@ YW, thankyou 4 your thought provoking reply. Loosen the rope on non-biblical human rules not on biblical rules.

The Church is now tending towards a great apostasy. Entertainment should not be confused with preaching the gospel. Most of the songs used for entertainment purposes are worldly and devoid of any spiritual food or teaching.

It is called glorification of the flesh and is devoid of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:5-9.

WATCH & PRAY not to fall into the temptation.

King David used to also ware expensive graments and was super rich. How many ministers of God do we know that are supper rich ??? i know very many..
